Video: Are There Things Not Material? Do Jinns or Demons Exist

Epigraph

“And most of them follow nothing but conjecture. Surely, conjecture avails nothing against truth. Indeed, Allah is well aware of what they do.” (Al Quran 10:36)

“But they have no knowledge thereof. They follow nothing but conjecture; and conjecture avails naught against truth.” (Al Quran 53:28)

The above video may seem too philosophical, at first glance, but I see it as very pragmatic and practical. It is very relevant to our daily life. Do jinns exists? If they do they may suddenly possess us or our loved ones and we will need faith healers or exorcists. If they do not exist we can be at ease.

The second interviewee in the above video, coming around minute 7 is a Christian philosopher JP Moreland. He does believe in demons and angels.

Let us find out the demographics of the Muslims’ belief in jinns.

According to the Quran, God created jinn as well as angels and humans. Belief in jinn is relatively widespread – in 13 of 23 countries where the question was asked, by Pew Research Center, more than half of Muslims believe in these supernatural beings.

In the South Asian countries surveyed, at least seven-in-ten Muslims affirm that jinn exist, including 84% in Bangladesh. In Southeast Asia, a similar proportion of Malaysian Muslims (77%) believe in jinn, while fewer in Indonesia (53%) and Thailand (47%) share this belief.

Across the Middle Eastern and North African nations surveyed, belief in jinn ranges from 86% in Morocco to 55% in Iraq.

Overall, Muslims in Central Asia and across Southern and Eastern Europe (Russia and the Balkans) are least likely to say that jinn are real. In Central Asia, Turkey is the only country where a majority (63%) of Muslims believe in jinn. Elsewhere in Central Asia, about a fifth or fewer Muslims accept the existence of jinn. In Southern and Eastern Europe, fewer than four-in-ten in any country surveyed believe in these supernatural beings.

In general, Muslims who pray several times a day are more likely to believe in jinn. For example, in Russia, 62% of those who pray more than once a day say that jinn exist, compared with 24% of those who pray less often. A similar gap also appears in Lebanon (+25 percentage points), Malaysia (+24) and Afghanistan (+21).

The survey also asked if respondents had ever seen jinn. In 21 of the 23 countries where the question was asked, fewer than one-in-ten report having seen jinn, while the proportion is 12% in Bangladesh and 10% in Lebanon.

With increasing education of the Muslims the jinns are disappearing, only ten percent of the Muslims have encountered them, just like fewer demons exist in the universities of Europe and a lot more in the villages of South America.

If you believe in jinns and even if they do not exist you or your loved ones can get possessed by them in case of any psychological stress or trauma.

  1. Verses from Surah Anaam that suggest that by jinn the Quran implies leading or powerful men.

On the day when He will gather them all together, He will say: O company of big ones, you exploited the people. Their supporters from among the common
people will say: Our Lord, some of us have benefited from others, but now we have reached the end of our term which Thou didst appoint for us. He will
announce: The Fire is your abode, wherein you shall abide, except that which Allah may will. Surely thy Lord is Wise, All-Knowing. In this manner We make
the wrongdoers helpers some of the others, because of that which they do.

O company of men, big and small, did not Messengers come to you from among yourselves who recited to you My Signs and warned you of your meeting
with Me this day? They will say; We bear witness against ourselves to that effect. The life of this world beguiled them with vain hopes, and they will bear
witness against themselves that they were disbelievers. Messengers are sent because thy Lord would not destroy the towns unjustly while their people have not
been warned. Everyone will rank according to his conduct. Thy Lord is not unmindful of that which they do.

Thy Lord is Self-Sufficient, full of mercy. He can do away with you if He please and cause to succeed you whoso He pleases even as He raised you from the
off-spring of another people. That which you are promised shall surely come
to pass and you cannot frustrate Allah’s design Say to them: O my people, do you pursue your purpose and I shall pursue mine, then soon will you know in
whose favour is determined the ultimate issue of this life. Surely, the wrongdoers shall not prosper. (128-137)
