JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The city of Depok has several times been named by the Setara Institute as a city with a low tolerance index score, or an intolerant city.

Recently, the title of intolerant city has again been assigned to Depok based on the 2022 Tolerant City Index (IKT) report released by the Setara Institute.

Depok occupies the second lowest position after the city of Cilegon, Banten.

One of the factors that caused Depok to be included in the list of intolerant cities was the sealing of the Ahmadiyya mosque there.

Even though Depok has repeatedly been included in the list of intolerant cities, Depok continues to reject these findings, said Setara Institute Senior Researcher, Bonar Tigor Naipospos, Wednesday (12/4/2023).

“This is not the first time Depok has been included in the category of cities with a low tolerance index score, but the reaction from the Depok City Government has always been the same, namely denial,” he explained.

According to Bonar, the research was carried out using standard and objective methodologies and indicators so that they could be accounted for.

“This research does not have any tendency, it only provides a certain point of view and tries to be objective,” said Bonar.

Denial of the Mayor of Depok

Previously it was reported, Depok Mayor Mohammad Idris denied the results of the Setara Institute report.

Idris believes that the results of Setara Institute’s research do not match the reality in Depok City, which he claims is in a peaceful condition.

“I think please, it is their right to conduct any survey. However, (so far) in the peaceful atmosphere in Depok City that I feel and the residents,” said Idris, Tuesday (11/4/2023).

“We can ask for a statement or reality from FKUB (Religious Harmony Forum) friends, whether there is discrimination or not,” Idris added.

Idris questioned the sealing of the Ahmadiyya mosque which was used as a measurement tool by the Setara Institute as an intolerant assessment of the city.

According to Idris, this is irrelevant because the sealing of the Ahmadiyya mosque does not violate the law.

“This must be questioned, is this really the case? Because we carried out the sealing in accordance with statutory regulations,” said Idris.

For Idris, the sealing of the Ahmadiyya mosque is an effort to protect and save the Ahmadiyya congregation from possible threats from local residents.

Moreover, said Idris, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has also issued a fatwa that Ahmadiyah is a deviant teaching.

“From there we guard. To protect them, we seal them. If that is used as evidence of intolerance, then we will question it,” said Idris.
