LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani police say they arrested eight men of the Ahmadi sect of Islam on Saturday who had opened fire on a group of Sunni Muslims the night prior, killing one and wounding another.

Senior officer Faisal Mukhtar said the Ahmadis shot at the Sunnis while they were chanting religious poems in the village of Bahuman, near Lahore in the eastern province of Punjab. One minor suspect was still missing.

The killing was a rare case of violence exercised by Ahmadis, who have long held a grievance against Pakistan’s majority Sunnis, who consider them heretics.

Ahmadis believe that an additional prophet named Ghulam Ahmad was sent by God in the 19th century, centuries after the Prophet Muhammad. That view is at odds with the fundamental Islamic principle that Muhammad was God’s final chosen messenger.

Pakistan amended its constitution in 1974 to specifically declare that Ahmadis are not Muslims and may not be called or call themselves that. It also barred them from preaching.

  1. Does anyone have more information on this incident? sounds totally against what we are used to.

  2. This incident has the potential of leading to communal violence against ahmadis, so it needs to be properly investigated and verified, or otherwise, as soon as possible. There already are youtube videos by non-ahmadis reporting the incident.

  4. This is not typical of ahmadis, and I didn’t think that ahmadis, despite having some flaws, had stooped so low as to perpetrate the atrocity of murdering for difference of religious opinion. So, it needs proper investigation and verification. Who are the accused? When did they become ahmadis, if they are ahmadis? On whose order/suggestion did they perpetrate this atrocity? And so on.

  5. I don’t believe this, either. Sounds very much like a plan to mobilize a mass anti-Ahmadi action of looting, killing and other abuse by these so-called Muslims under the guise of some of them pretending to be Ahmadis.

I’ve never heard of our community being offensive and start shooting/killing like the others, ever. They don’t go around looking for trouble. So this sounds like a grand plan to persecute our community by these other Muslims(?!), in cahoots with the authorities, i.e. the cops!

As suggested by Zubair sb., our jama’at official should clarify the identities of these supposed ‘Ahmadi’ suspects and the reason why…

  6. Ahmadis in Pakistan have long been the target of systematic attacks, and successive Pakistani governments have failed to respect, protect and promote their human rights
