A Swedish Muslim woman has won compensation after her job interview was ended when she refused a handshake.

Farah Alhajeh, 24, was applying for a job as an interpreter when she declined to shake the hand of a male interviewer for religious reasons.

She placed her hand over her heart in greeting instead.

The Swedish labour court ruled the company had discriminated against her and ordered it to pay 40,000 kronor ($4,350; £3,420) in compensation.

  1. That was a no brainer, she deserved it. Why would you hold her liable or responsible for not shaking hands with e opposite sex member when it’s against her religion in an interview when it should be something that the employer should respect.

  2. Those who claim that woem forbid to shack hand with opposite sex is wrong and mislead women and create a problem not for her self but to whole Muslim.

Forbiding women to shack hand with male is Arab tradition— Allah never say in Al Quran—those lady dansge the image of Islam.

The Islamic clerics should know that Alah sent His laws in 2 conditions : firts, is in ear time.Second is in peaceful time.

In wartime Muslim forbid to shack hand with male— forbid to marry with Christian— forbid to elect non Muslim— forbid to make friends — forbid to eat the meat that non Muslim slaughter.— women have to cover whole body etc etc

Very sad indeed– there are still women who follow the ancient Arab tradition.

    All love ❤️

    • The people who grant residence permits to ‘non-Swedes’ should know that they may have different customs. Just as they appreciate the food in Chinese and Turkish restaurants they also should appreciate the different cultures, which enrich the local life.

    • Somi, no one forbids s me to not shake a man’s hand. It’s my choice, and I choose not to be physically touching another male person that I’m not related to. IT IS MY CHOICE SO WHY WON’T YOY JUST LET ME MAKE MY CHOICE. Why are you so imminent on forcing me in touching another man I don’t want to though. I consider that harrasement.

  3. One should respect every other cultures and traditions.
I totally agree with Riffat and Rafiq’s comments.

  4. Yes, Every one who has broad knowledge will respect other tradition or religion— but we have to realize that if we live in our friend house we have to respect the host family tradition first— so Muslim who live in thr West should respect and adapt the host culture and religion— if you cannot respect and not wiser— will create problem!!
Islam is not a religion of conflict, but a religion of peace and blessing.

Do not be provocative Muslim— be wiser!!

    All ❤️

  5. As a Muslim I feel very confident and comfortable with shaking hands only with women. We do respect men and bend our heads when we need to meet them. I feel as a Muslim we can pick our boundaries.
