Neil deGrasse Tyson drops a big fat truth bomb on the thoughts and prayers crowd after the Florida school shooting.
After the recent school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, Neil deGrasse Tyson shares the indisputable facts concerning the supposed power of prayer.
Earlier this week, 17 people were shot dead, and more were injured after a 19-year-old former student opened fire at the public high school.
In the aftermath of the shooting, politicians and others offered the usual thoughts and prayers. For example, President Donald Trump tweeted:
(My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.)
Others went even further, suggesting that prayers would have stopped the tragic mass shooting. For example, Christian radio host Bryan Fischer claimed that organized, coerced school prayer would have prevented the Florida school shooting.
In an apparent response to this kind of faulty thinking, Neil deGrasse Tyson issued the following statement via Twitter:
(Evidence collected over many years, obtained from many locations, indicates that the power of Prayer is insufficient to stop bullets from killing school children)
Tyson is right. Prayer is insufficient. In fact, prayer is pointless.
Prayer is spiritual masturbaton: it might make the person doing the praying feel a little better, but prayer will never affect change in the real world.
Prayer will not stop bullets. Prayer will not change the gun laws. Prayer will not change the culture of the gun that plagues the U.S. Prayer will not stop the terrorist organization known as the NRA.
As a nation we live with and tolerate a culture of gun violence. All the while any proposal to enact sensible reform to curb gun violence is squashed by the the NRA and the attending all powerful gun lobby.
Indeed, the NRA and the gun lobby intimidates and bullies politicians, while spreading deception and misinformation to the general public. They are the equivalent of the 20th century tobacco lobby, merchants of death, claiming their product is safe while countless Americans die.
Bottom line: Prayer is insufficient to stop bullets from killing school children.
