Australia child abuse inquiry finds ‘serious failings’

A five-year inquiry into sexual abuse in Australia has released its final report, saying institutions had “seriously failed” to protect children.

The royal commission, Australia’s highest form of public inquiry, heard more than 8,000 testimonies from victims of abuse.

The accusations covered churches, schools and sports clubs over decades.
Among more than 400 recommendations, the report calls on the Catholic Church to overhaul its celibacy rules.

“Tens of thousands of children have been sexually abused in many Australian institutions. We will never know the true number,” the report said.

“It is not a case of a few ‘rotten apples’. Society’s major institutions have seriously failed.”

Since 2013, the royal commission has referred more than 2,500 allegations to authorities.

The final report, released on Friday, added 189 recommendations to 220 that had already been made public. The proposals will now be considered by legislators.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said “a national tragedy” had been exposed.

Who did the inquiry speak to?

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse had the power to look at any private, public or non-government body involved with children.

It was contacted by more than 15,000 people. More than 8,000 victims told their stories, many for the first time in private sessions.

The commission also received more than 1,300 written accounts and held 57 public hearings across the nation. Allegations were raised against more than 4,000 institutions.

Religious ministers and school teachers were the most commonly reported perpetrators, the report said. The greatest number were in Catholic institutions.

What did it recommend?

The commission had previously recommended that Catholic clerics should face criminal charges if they fail to report sexual abuse disclosed to them during confession.
The final report on Friday urged Australian Catholic bishops to petition the Vatican to amend canon law to allow priests to report such disclosures.

It also said the Catholic Church should consider making celibacy voluntary for priests because while it was “not a direct cause of child sexual abuse”, it had “contributed to the occurrence of child sexual abuse, especially when combined with other risk factors”.

The BBC’s Hywel Griffith in Sydney said applying mandatory reporting to confession would trigger debate across the Catholic world, and has raised questions for bodies far beyond Australia’s borders.

  1. This is a universal problem. Thankfully it’s coming to the surface now, so more news to be expected.

  2. All Western countries are capitals of rape, sexual grooming, teenage pregnancies and abortions before the arrival of Muslims. West always blame Muslims for their own evils. Child/women abusers come in all colours, all spheres of life from the very top of the social ladder to the very bottom of the social ladder. To try and make this about race/religion is very narrow sighted on your part. The thought of being a virgin on your wedding night forget it, where are our morals and values. The answer, down the toilet. These are children having sex, getting pregnant exploring with partners. Just where is society going, I’m not psychic but from what’s going on in society today the future does not look pretty.

More than a quarter of young women today lost their virginity when they were below the legal age of consent, NHS figures reveal. This does not surprise me at all, Britain has the most teen pregnancies in the whole of Europe. . Very sad that despite sexual education in schools nothing has really changed in the last 30 years, if anything it has become worse. Britain has the highest rates of abortion, STDs, crime, obesity, divorce, illiterate school leavers, teen pregnancies, excessive drinking and drug use. Makes me ashamed.
What’s the point of the legal age being 16 when you are being taught at school that it’s ok as long as you practice safe sex. Nothing about love, respect, serious relationships or more importantly abstinence! Oh and something needs to be done about BOYS, too! Girls can’t be the only ones responsible for resisting pressure you know. More sex education in schools = more teenage pregnancies= more abortions. One of the problems is that now in schools we are taught safe sex at an early age, and not abstinence. The message was basically that sex at a young age is fine as long as it’s practiced safely. It should be taught that at such a young age, neither protected or unprotected sex is ok. The message is simply not clear enough.

Indiscipline, incivility, binge drinking, drug addiction, gun and knife crimes, teenage pregnancies and abortion are part and parcel of British schooling. These are the reasons why majority of Muslim parents would like to send their children to Muslim schools with Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods. Only less than 10% attend Muslim schools and more than 90% keep on attending state and church schools to be mis-educated and de-educated by non-Muslim monolingual teachers.
There are hundreds of state and church schools where Muslim children are in majority. In my opinion, all such schools may be opted out as Muslim Academies. There is no place for a non-Muslim child or a teacher in a Muslim school.

    • There is a bad thing and good thing every school
The dangerous thing if the parents send their kids to Madrasah or Islamic school they teach student to hate other religion and to force the gilr students to wear burqa ir hijab.
If students have hatred in their heart toward Jews and Christian they become the extremist Muslim and then create problem in global society. Muslim want to live exclusive, like Hamas, Isis, Al Qaida etc

My advise to the Muslim parents:
      1. Send your kids to non religion school so they can live in plural society and they become a tolerant Muslim.

      2. Teach islamic religion / Islamic value to your kids at home. Your kids will know what is right and wrong in Islam. A patent is as a role model at home.

As long as you teach your children as well as possible, and then pray to Allah for His protection and guidance from evil act.

I urge Muslim clerics who live in the Western country, please do not create Islamic school, Grocery Halal, Halal food— Islamic Bank—Halal Restaurant etc.

If you do, it means you are a provocative clerics and invite Islamophobia to hate Muslim as general.

      • Actually most Europeans are grateful for the variety of foods that the Immigrants brought with them. When I was young during any outside occasion there would be grilled (pork) sausages, later also grilled chicken. Now we find Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Turkish Donor Kebab, Indo-Pakistani Somosas etc. Everyone appreciates the variety, halal and otherwise.
