Muslim father forgives son’s killer ‘in spirit of Islam’, hugs him in court

November 10, 2017

KENTUCKY: Father of a slain Muslim pizza delivery driver on Tuesday hugged and forgave his son’s murderer, telling him he did it in the ‘spirit of Islam’.

It was a sight for sore eyes when Munim Sombat Jitmoud, a Muslim resident of Lexington, Kentucky, hugged Trey Alexander Relford, the man involved in the murder of his son and told the suspect that he was forgiven.

Relford was so overwhelmed by the scene that he started crying in the middle of the court.

“Islam teaches that God will not be able to forgive” someone until the person who was wronged forgives that person,” said Jitmoud when he spoke to media. “The door of opportunity for God to forgive him is open. … So, reach out to Him. You have a new chapter of good life coming,” he added.

Relford was emotional and apologised to the Jitmoud family for taking their son’s life.

“There’s not much I can really say. I’m sorry about what happened that day. I cannot do nothing to give that back to you.”

Salahuddin Jitmoud was making one of his last deliveries for Pizza Hut at night in April 2015 when he was stabbed to death and robbed at an apartment complex located at Lexington, Kentucky. Police had recovered his body which was lying on the breezeway at the apartment complex.

Three people were arrested for Salahuddin’s murder but only Relford was indicted as police officials claimed he was the one who had planned the robbery.

Two years earlier, Salahuddin’s mother had died which had crushed Munim Jitmoud.

Relford was sentenced to 31 years in prison after he had confessed to being guilty as an accomplice in the murder of Salahuddin.

“It’s been two years and seven months of suffering along with many nightmares,” he said. “Whatever happens to you is from Allah. Let the believer put their trust in Him.”

Jitmoud said that he read the Holy Quran to comfort his heart and the 51st verse from chapter nine particularly brought him peace. This is the translation of that verse:-

“Say, ‘Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.’ And upon Allah [God] let the believers rely.”

Jitmoud whispered in Relford’s ear to “do good deeds” when he gets out of prison and that he has ‘confidence that Allah is forgiving.’

The news has been widely covered by foreign media organisations and international publications.

  1. According to Islamic Law – shariah – the court could set the killer free, if the father has forgiven him. A very important difference to Western law. Which one is superior?

  2. True, in Shariah Law the Killer can be set free if the next of kin forgives the killer, but in the west there is no forgiveness nor is there any tolerance anymore. All I see is is fear, fear of what might happen if someone different from us might live next door or might be living in our city or state or even country. Why do we fear what’s different from us, change isn’t necessarily a bad thing, change is what led science and technology this far, change is how we left the caves and made these sky scrapers. So let’s keep the momentum going.

  3. Islamic laws are different than Western laws. As this decision will have a strong impact upon the western society . I hope and pray for the father that God gives him strength too.

    • Islaic laws are the ancient law, it is not relevant in 21 century.
God sent His laws depand on the condition of people and place.
Like: burqa. If God send His law in Europe countries, God will not command women to wear Burqa or hijab. Right?

God is All Wiser, He knows every thing that good for people. God so love His people

      • Somi does not get the point in his one tracked mind: ‘Muslim father forgives son’s killer’. Is forgiveness ‘too ancient’? I think it would be nice if Western Law could also consider when sentencing the forgiveness of the father. At the moment Western law does not care anything about the victims, just goes ahead blindly without caring for the attitude of the victims. It would be a good addition to Western law if the opinion of the victims and their families would be considered. And, yes, I was tempted to delete your comment bevcause the forgiveness of the son’s killers has nothing to do with burqas…

      • Somi, the command to cover oneself is for men (chapter24:verse31) and women (chapter24:verse32) and it is in the Quran. Plus, why would the European counties not need the women to cover up, are they not beautiful? Were they not made delicate and voluptuous?

Somi, think about it, why do you think there is such a high increase in pedophilia behaviour around the world?

  4. @ Raffiq.. we live in 21th century, modern society, global society — it is not make sense at all if we follow the ancient islamic laws—look at ISIS who implement the Ancient Islamic laws— they captured women and then they sold around $ 400, selling women slaves are allowed in Islam. Modern society do not allow such the ancient acts. Very shameful..

Other example: those who convert his religion should be killed in Islam( apostate)
It dose not make sense if some one kill other and he will be freed by giving forgiveness to him?
As we know that at the ancient world did not have the justice system yet as we have today.

The Islamic laws have to be reformed badly.. in order we can show to the world again the beauty of Islam from God.

    • How many times did we tell Somi that the Qur’an says ‘There is no compulsion in religion’. No where does it say that converts should be killed. Please go to ‘Islamic States website’ if you want to argue such things. (Yes, I will delete such mails in the future).

  5. @ Ruffat
==why would the European counties not need the women to cover up, are they not beautiful? Were they not made delicate and voluptuous?==

Because they live in not desert country like Saudi Arabis
Why Allah command women to cover whole body of men and women because to protect their skin and hair from the Sand strom. The sand storm will hurt prople skin and hairz

Second reason is to protect women from kidnapping by unknown man, at the time of prophet often occured the tribe conflict, each tribe want to kidnape a woman from other tribe. That is why Allah and prophet command to wear burqa.

I think I answer your question. Think about it!

    • Somi, more women are sold, kiddnapped and forced into prostitution in Europe and North America than in Saudi Arabia or Muslim countries. Isn’t it better to cover so they safe guard their beauty from those who take advantage. I’m sure you have read many of PEW research journals to know better

    • Hijab is not to protect from sand storm or weather, and in the Quran it does not state that the Hijab or veil was specifically for the region of people living in the dessert or people who spoke Arabic language so please stop misguiding people.

please read Quran, chapter 24, verses 31&32. I’m providing you some translation below.
Allah says in the Holy Quran:

Say to the believing men that they restrain their eyes and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Surely, Allah is well aware of what they do. (Chapter 24: Verse 31)

And say to the believing women that they restrain their eyes and guard their private parts, and that they disclose not their natural and artificial beauty except that which is apparent thereof, and that they draw their head-coverings over their bosoms, and that they disclose not their beauty save to their husbands, or to their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands or their sons or the sons of their husbands or their brothers, or the sons of their brothers, or the sons of their sisters, or their women, or what their right hands possess, or such of male attendants as have no sexual appetite, or young children who have no knowledge of the hidden parts of women. And they strike not their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may become known. And turn ye to Allah all together, O believers, that you may succeed. (Chapter 24: Verse 32)

  6. Somi, Quran is the holy book of Islam and Islam is the religion sent for all of man kind and not just for Arabia. Yes Allah commanded for women and maen to cover themselves but not due to weather or due to the location, as it says in the Quran.

You said, and I quote “Women were forbidden to get good education as male does, –forbidden shake hand with a man—forbidden to sit side by side with man—forbidden to walk with a man- Woman have to stay home daylong to raise her kids. Girls forced to marry with old men at age of 11-13. Woman do not have the same freedom as male does. Those who did not follow the ancient Arab tradition will be accused traitor and the will be punished cruelly. Those who commit crime will be punished and will be executed at front of public such as; beheading, amputation, flogging, hanging, and crucifixion.”

This is not part of Islam, this is all cultural. And if you speak of the embraced western freedom where the women are free to walk around topless than that’s a freedom I elect to revoke. Otherwise, I feel like if I have to be force to take off my hijab and if I have to be force to remove my identity as a Muslim in the name of western freedom than why doesn’t western freedom relieve me of my other oppressions as a woman as well. Such as child labour and breastfeeding, periods and menopause, menstrual cramps, sleepless nights caring for a sick infant and months in the NICU, 10 months of pregnancy etc. Once the western freedom can get rid of these for me, than I can think about if I want to remove my hijab.
