Spain’s Prime Minister is set to impose direct rule over Catalonia in an unprecedented move never seen before in the country’s democracy.
It comes after Catalonia’s leader Carles Puigdemont has refused to clarify whether he has made a declaration of independence or not.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is to hold a Cabinet meeting on Saturday to trigger Article 155 – which has been described as the ‘nuclear option’.
Article 155 became a democratic rule in 1978 after the death of dictator General Franco and allows Madrid to impose direct rule in a crisis, although it has never been invoked before.
Puigdemont was handed a deadline of today by Spain’s Prime Minister who urged him to “act sensibly” when making his final decision.
But in a letter to central government, Puigdemont said that the regional parliament could vote on a formal declaration of independence if Madrid fails to hold talks with Catalonia.
