Muhammad Ali’s former wife champions religious understanding, criticizes Donald Trump

Khalilah Camacho-Ali, the former wife of the late heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, is pursuing a broad effort to combat discrimination against Muslims, Jews and others: public speaking on college campuses, writing a book, planning a rally and preparing to file a federal lawsuit.

She’s also offering pointed criticism of President Donald Trump, both on style and substance, something she repeated Tuesday during a speech and question-and-answer session at the School of International and Public Affairs at Florida International University.

Camacho-Ali, has long been outspoken. But she’s gained new public prominence this year after incidents involving her and her son, Muhammad Ali Jr., at airports in Fort Lauderdale and Washington, D.C. They described the episodes as detentions marked by questions about their Muslim faith.

At FIU she called for increased understanding among all kinds of people and those with different religious beliefs. She told the mostly student audience of about 60 that there’s humanity within everyone, “even Trump, but his is not coming out.”

“I’m trying to educate Mr. Trump. I’m not trying to persecute him or say bad things about him,” she said. “Don’t be angry. Don’t hate. If people are hating you, pray for them. Pray for them. Because eventually, if God wills, they’re going to learn.”
