40 000 participants at meetings of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat

Rheinstetten (dpa / lsw) – At the annual meeting of the Muslim movement Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat (AMJ) on weekends many more participants than expected came.

Around 40 000 people met in Rheinstetten near Karlsruhe for talks and prayers, as a spokesman for the organizers, Asif Malik, on Sunday said. Economists expected are 35 000 visitors.

Among them were reportedly also in 2000 non-Muslims.

The goal is to show them to the “true face of Islam,” said Malik. Islam is dominated not by violence but by peace and love. A thematic focus was on the image of Islam to the outside.

The three-day AMJ General Meeting was started under much higher security than in previous years. According to police, on Sunday, it remained peaceful.

The AMJ is recognized in Hamburg and Hesse as a body and thus has a comparable status as the Christian churches. In Baden-Württemberg has submitted a request for recognition.

The Islamic reform movement claims to have nationwide up to 40,000 followers, of which 5000 in Baden-Württemberg, and operates 50 mosques.
