The Last Sermon of the Prophet Muhammad: The Charter for Humanity

Posted by

Epigraph: O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female; and We have made you into tribes and sub-tribes that you may recognize one another. Verily, the most honourable among you, in the sight of Allah, is he who is the most righteous among you. Surely, Allah is All-knowing, All-Aware.  (Al Quran 49:14)

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) delivered his last sermon (Khutbah) on the ninth of Dhul Hijjah (12th and last month of the Islamic year), 10 years after Hijrah (migration from Makkah to Madinah) in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat. His words were quite clear and concise and were directed to the entire humanity.

After praising, and thanking Allah he said:

O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today.

O people, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. Allah has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. Allah has Judged that there shall be no interest and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn Abd Al-Muttalib (Prophet’s uncle) shall henceforth be waived…

Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O people, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah’s trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.

O people, listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except bypiety (taqwa) and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

Remember, one day you will appear before Allah and answer your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O people, no prophet or apostle will come after me and no new faith will be born.

Reason well, therefore, O people, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Qu’ran and my example, the Sunnah and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people.

Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal has given us the longest and perhaps the most complete version of this sermon in his Masnud, Hadith no. 19774.)

  1. Accepting Muhammad’s last sermon as the charter for humanity is a recipe for apocalypse. In paragraph 2 Muhammad calls on his followers to regard the lives and property of fellow muslims as sacred trust. As far as he and they are concerned, others do not matter.
How can that be a charter for humanity?

  2. He was living in Arab society of 7th century, so many of his terminology is reflective of that but there is enough in the sermon, like equating Arabs with non-Arabs and his other deeds and sayings and verses of the Holy Quran about the Jews and Christians and others, to show that he believed in coexistence of all religions and a pluralistic society.

He actually had helped create one when he had moved to Medina first from Mecca.

  3. Everyone should share this msg of our master chief of the prophets and the commander of faithful, according to his or her capabilities.

    Supplication of Prophet Ibrahim
When a father stood on the stone and His beloved son Ismail (`Alayhi-salam) stand beside Him helping Him by passing the bricks to build the House of Allah.
    Allah says:
    Quran 2:127
And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) and (his son) Isma’il (Ishmael) were raising the foundations of the House (the Ka’bah at Makkah), (saying), “Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (Qur’an 2:127)
    Allah says:
    Quran 2:125
And (remember) when We made the House (the Ka’bah at Makkah) a place of resort for mankind and a place of safety. And take you (people) the Maqam (place) of Ibrahim (Abraham) [or the stone on which Ibrahim (Abraham) stood while he was building the Ka’bah] as a place of prayer (for some of your prayers, e.g. two Rak’at after the Tawaf of the Ka’bah at Makkah), and We commanded Ibrahim (Abraham) and Isma’il (Ishmael) that they should purify My House (the Ka’bah at Makkah) for those who are circumambulating it, or staying (I’tikaf), or bowing or prostrating themselves (there, in prayer). (Qur’an 2:125)
While father and son were fulfilling the commandment of Allah, Prophet Ibrahim (`Alayhi-salam) took this golden opportunity and started to supplicate to the All Mighty.
    Allah says:
    Quran 2:126
And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said, “My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day.” He (Allah) answered: “As for him who disbelieves, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the torment of the Fire, and worst indeed is that destination! (Qur’an 2:126)
Why Ibrahim (`Alayhi-salam) asked for security first and then Fruits because He knew that to have a peaceful city you need to have a Law and Order first, once the city is secured from bad things like stealing, fraud, killing, fornication etc then more people wants to settle down and bring more business in that city, like these day we say Peace and Prosperity.
    Allah says:
    Quran 2:128
Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage – Hajj and ‘Umrah, etc.), and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. (Qur’an 2:128)
When Prophet Ibrahim (`Alayhi-salam) was building the Kabah, He was doing the best ibbadah of all, one can imagine that he must be so happy and excited but still He remembers to make Dua to Allah, first of all, He praised him and asked to accept his service not only from Him and Ismail only but He prayed for the offspring, that teaches us that we should be humble in every action what we do.
    Allah says:
    Quran 2:129
Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own (and indeed Allah answered their invocation by sending Muhammad Peace be upon him ), who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Quran) and Al-Hikmah (full knowledge of the Islamic laws and jurisprudence or wisdom or Prophethood, etc.), and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. (Qur’an 2:129)
Then Ibrahim (`Alayhi-salam) asked for a Messenger among from them. Similar example, when it comes to choosing a Governor or a Judge or a doctor, people will always look for a person who they know and their background and is one of their own people, and not an outsider. To answer to Ibrahim (`Alayhi-salam’s) dua, Allah Subhana sent Prophet (PBUH) was an Arab and was from city of Makkah. Between Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) and Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) many other Prophets came and they all came with the same message that there is only one GOD….Allah.
Haj is the fifth pillar in Islam, thousands of people around the world goes to Makkah to perform the Haj, they will circulate around the Kabah, will witness the mount Safa and mount Marwa, and the very same place where Prophet Ibrahim(AS) fulfilled Allah’s command when he left His wife BIBI Hajer and his beloved baby son Ismail with very little food and water in this dessert land.
When He ( Ibrahim A.S ) was leaving, BiBI Hajer asked Ibrahim (AS) that, is this the commandment from Allah to leave them here, so Ibrahim (AS) answered in affirmative.
When the food was finished and Baby Ismail was crying out of hunger, BiBi Hajer went to mount Safa to look for help when She couldn’t find any one from here She went down and went to other mountain called Marwa, She ran from Safa mountain to Marwa mountain seven times. During the pilgrim all the Muslim will do the same action in remembrance of BIBI Hajer action.
People who are not performing the Hajj, can still get reward by engaging themselves from the beginning of 1st Zul Hijjah to 10th Zul Hijjah, by Doing abundance of Ziker (remembrance of Allah), One should say “Subbahnah Allah Walhumdulillah Wala Illaha Illallah Wallahu Akbar”, give extra charity in these days and fast. Note: Fasting is prohibited on EID Day
The best of all, is the day of Arafa (a day before Eid day) , one should do more of these deed on this day, It was reported from Abu Qutaadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafaa.
    Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said:
It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.’ Narrated by Muslim.
