Written by Dr. Karimullah Zirvi

The second edition of the book, Invocations of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings of Allah be on him, was published in August of 2014.

The book starts off with introducing the concept and benefits of prayers or Dua.  The very first prayer to be recited in the beginning of any action, mentioned in the book among the 240, is none other than the one with which each chapter of the Holy Quran opens, except for one:

BISMILLAH

This prayer means: I begin in the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.

In introducing this prayer Dr. Karimullah Zirvi quotes a Hadith:

Hadrat Abu Hurairah relates that the Holy Prophet said: “Every task which is begun without pronouncing ‘In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful,’ is incomplete and devoid of blessings.”

The author tells us a golden key to enhance the success of our prayers, in the following narrative.

The Holy Prophet once said to Hadrat ‘A’ishah , “I know one  attribute of God Almighty, that if one mentions that attribute when  praying, that prayer is definitely accepted by God. Hadrat ‘A’ishah with great enthusiasm asked the Holy Prophet to tell her that attribute of God  Almighty. The Holy Prophet said, “He thinks it is not appropriate to tell  that attribute.” Hadrat ‘A’ishah was displeased and sat on one side. She  thought that by doing so, the Holy Prophet would show his love and he  himself would tell her the attribute of God. However, when the Holy  Prophet did not tell her, she got up, came close to the Holy Prophet and  stood there. She lovingly kissed the forehead of the Holy Prophet and  again asked him to tell her the attribute of God Almighty. The Holy  Prophet said, “A’ishah! the fact is that it is not right to ask for anything from God Almighty through this attribute of His. That is why, I do not  want to tell you the attribute of God.” Then Hadrat ‘A’ishah was again  displeased. She got up, did ablution, sat on a Prayer mat, and started to  recite this prayer loudly, so that the Holy Prophet could hear her saying: “O Allah! I beg to You, O Merciful! I beg to You, O the Kind, the − Benificent! I beg to You, I beg to You through all of Your Holy names and attributes which I know and which I do not know to forgive me and have mercy on me. ”

The Holy Prophet was smiling while hearing this prayer. He said, “O ‘A’ishah! That attribute of God is one of the attributes you have − mentioned.”

Thus, there is a strong relationship between acceptance of prayers and the attributes of Allah, especially if we try to develop those attributes in our personalities, within our limited capacities. God Almighty has said in the Holy Qur’an: “And to Allah belong perfect attributes. So call on Him by these.” (7:181)

The book describes the 99 attributes or names of Allah:

asmaa03

One of the 240 sections of the book, describes a Hadith stating the crown verse (2:256) to be the greatest of the verses of the Holy Quran, as it is instrumental in our understanding of attributes of Allah and bringing our prayers closer to acceptance:

002-256a

002-256b

Its translation is:

Allah — there is no God but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining. Slumber seizes Him not, nor sleep. To Him belongs whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that will intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them; and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He pleases. His knowledge extends over the heavens and the earth; and the care of them burdens Him not; and He is the High, the Great.

The book also describes in one of the sections that invoking blessings or Darud Shareef on the Holy Prophet Muhammad, is an important means, to seek prayers from Allah.

Now, I will  list all the 240 prayers discussed with Arabic, transliteration and English translation in this wonderful collection by Dr. Karimullah Zirvi:
