Muslim woman attacked at Vienna bank

A 60-year-old Muslim woman was seriously injured after being attacked at a bank in Vienna, in an incident which appears to have been motivated by Islamophobia.

Pensioner Selver S. was waiting in a queue to collect her pension at a Bawag bank branch in Schönbrunner Strasse (Meidling) when a man approached her, insulted her and repeatedly shoved her, knocking her to the floor. She was taken to hospital, suffering a spinal injury.

A 40-year-old man was arrested outside the bank shortly afterwards.

Her son Engin told the Heute newspaper that she suffered a lumbar fracture and had to spend seven days in Hanusch hospital. She had to have an operation on her spine and is now being cared for at home by her son.

There have been several incidents where women wearing head scarves have been insulted and attacked in Vienna recently, which comes after frequent stories in the press about young Muslims being radicalized and travelling to Syria to fight alongside Isis.

    However, I have a different take on this article. Not the substance of it, but that it is ‘front page’ news here when the terrorist murder of an American woman in the UAE recently was not mentioned at all (that I could find) on this website.

    This leads me to believe, perhaps, that the mistreatment of individual Muslims in the West is more important, or newsworthy, than the same is to individual Westerners in Muslim lands.

    Maybe, this was an oversight; maybe, the MT did post an article on that incident and I just didn’t see it. I do know that the MT, to their credit, has posted articles about the dire plight of resident Christians and other non-Muslims in Muslim lands.

    However, I have noticed a trend here that emphasizes what I am implying. That the least little anti-Muslim incident is posted, yet the same is not equally the case for non-Muslims.

    Additionally, I protest the general use of ‘Islamophobia’ for two reasons:

    1.) A ‘phobia’ is an irrational psychiatric condition as described in the DSM-5. No such phobia exists within that definitive text.

    2.) ‘phobia’ is never attached to any other anti-religious behaviors e.g. Christianophobia or Hinduophobia etc. The use of ‘Islamophobia’ to describe anti-Muslim attitudes and/or actions is spurious and has no basis in fact.

    I will close with a quote from the US President Abraham Lincoln, “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in…to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.” Amen, I say…
