For decades, Cubans fleeing their island home in search of a new life in the US have crossed the shark-infested waters in makeshift rafts.

But when Jorge Armando Martinez decided to make the journey in February he chose a different method of transport: his windsurfing board.

Thinking the voyage would last only a few hours, Martinez, 28, took only a bottle of water and a bag of sweets. He was at sea for four days.

He spoke to the BBC about how he survived and eventually found his way to an island in the Florida Keys.
