JAIPUR: A 20-year-old girl taught a lesson to her fiancee for demanding dowry and insulting her parents in Sikar. Taking a bold step, she called him up a few hours before the wedding on Sunday and informed him that she was ending their engagement. The story, however, ended on a happy note when a youth, impressed with her boldness, proposed to her and agreed to marry her in the same mandap. The wedding took place on the same date as scheduled. Only the groom had changed.
The wedding, which became the talk of the town, took place at a marriage garden behind Krishi Upaj Mandi in Sikar on Sunday night. The girl, Seema Purohit, a college graduate, was to marry a youth from Basant Vihar locality in Sikar.
“They were engaged for the past one-and-a-half years. Everything was all right in the beginning. However, the fiancee’s behaviour started to change gradually. He used to scold Seema, insult her and even demand dowry. He threatened to end the engagement if dowry was not paid,” said a family member of the girl.
The girl and her family members didn’t take it seriously. The fiancee and his family members, however, crossed the limit a day before the wedding on Saturday.
They had organized a feast where they invited Seema’s father and other family members. When the family members went there, the fiancee and his family members allegedly ridiculed them and asked them to buy a car for him if they wanted the wedding to take place.
Seema could not take it anymore. She called up her fiancee and informed him that there was no need for him and his family members to come for the wedding on Sunday as she was ending the engagement.
It was then Tarun Pareek, an engineer by profession, came into the picture. Tarun’s father and Seema’s father are friends. When Tarun heard what had happened and how boldly Seema had cancelled the wedding, he offered to marry Seema in the same mandap which had been set up for the wedding between Seema and Vikas.
“She took a bold move. She fought for her principles. It impressed me. That is why I agreed to marry her,” Tarun said.
The girl’s family members had informed the police also. A police team from the nearby station stood guard during the wedding.

Congratulations to the new couple! I am sure the girl got a better husband…
No wonder INDiAN women can be Durga, Sarsavati or Laxmi with time .
Agree with Rafiq Sahib.
There should be no case of any dowry in any religion. Let us say that when a gentleman is seeking a job and the employer tells him to bring a car for the company he is joining, that would not be any good appointment. That would be disappointment.
I hope this becomes a regular practice in South Asia. This may be the only way to put an end to this burdensome custom.
Honorable gifts from parents or relatives for bride is a good practice and must be continued but making demands and even heavy demands from other side are unfair. The society, media and religious authorities can make a gradual difference. Its mainly about show off form both sides. And currently Media and society at large are encouraging the show offs.
