55.    It is not for the Prophet and those who believe that they should ask of God forgiveness for the idolaters, even though they may be kinsmen

[9:113] It is not for the Prophet and those who believe that they should ask of God forgiveness for the idolaters, even though they may be kinsmen, after it has become plain to them that they are the people of Hell. [9:114] And Abraham’s asking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him, but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him. Surely, Abraham was most tender-hearted, forbearing.

  1. Assalamo Alaikum Warahmatullah
Jazak Allah Khair for posting this as I have a query related to this. May I please ask if based on this verse and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (saw) are we allowed to pray for an idol worshipper from any religion after they have passed away?

If there are individuals confirming to people that they can pray for those who have passed away (no matter what religion they come from) and seek forgiveness for them. I have a slight issue with this aspect and wish to know what is the Islamic norm in this please.

  2. You can pray if the person was not militant in his or her polytheism. In other words he or she did not have an animosity against Allah.

  3. Then how would you explain the Holy Prophet’s (saw) action towards the grave of his mother?
