BBC Radio: Beyond Belief: When is a Muslim not a Muslim?

BBC News

Officially anyone who declares that “There is one God and Muhammed is his prophet” is a Muslim. But many Muslims argue that the beliefs of the Ahmedi community mean they cannot be part of the faith. There are about 12 million Ahmedi worldwide and their headquarters, originally in Pakistan, are now in London. Their founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, claimed to be a prophet, although a lesser one than Mohammed, and it is this claim that critics say put his followers outside the fold of Islam. Joining Ernie to discuss the Ahmedi are Imam Ataul Rashed from the Ahmedi London Mosque, Dr Sahib Bleher founder of the Islamic Party of Britain, and Dr Simon Valentine, author of “Islam and the Ahmaddiya Jama’at.”.

  1. Only ALLAH has full Knowledge

Surah Al-Ahzab 33:40 ” Muhammad is the Seal of The Prophets
And GOD full knowledge of all things.”

Seal: Complete, Secure, Finalise, Confirm, hence no further addition; FULL STOP

THE ALMIGHTY certifies in Surah AL-MAIDA:4 ” This day have those who reject Faith given up all hope of your religion: Yet fear them not, but fear ME. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed MY favour upon you.”

    Umar Solim – England

  2. Prophet Muhammed (S.W.A) has been addressed as Khatemun Nabiin and therefore claiming to be a Prophet by any person whosoever it is should be dealt with the law of blasphemy.
Will any reader be pleased to let me know whether Mirza Gholam Ahmed has called himself a Prophet. If, so, how if not, why the people accuse him put the blame. What did he call himself.

  3. No Ahamdis confuse normal muslims by illuding the definition of Khatme e nabuwwat. They say Prophet Muhammad saw is last prophet and still wait for Jesus pbuh. This is the first contradiction in their beliefs.

If the meaning of Qaatam means Last the neither old nor new prophet can xome. Else if we with definition of LAST the Jesus aa will be last and not Prophet Muhammad saw.

So the question is nabuwwat allowed or not? If Nabi can can come. From the definition of NonAhamdis the word Qaatam means ONLY OLD NABI CAN COME CAN BUT NOT NEW ONE.

we Ahamdis arw ready to accept if they show a single verse from Holy Quran supporting the above statement?

  4. Salaam here is the true answer from all sects of Islam!!

“He is the Knower of the unseen (ghayb), and does not reveal His Unseen to anyone, except one chosen from His messengers…” (72:26-27)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani explained this verse thus: “It follows from this verse that Prophets can see some of the Unseen, and so do the Awliya’ that follow each particular Prophet also, as each takes from his Prophet and is graced (yukram) with his knowledge.” (Fath al-Bari 8:660).

(18 February 1372 – 2 February 1448, 852 A.H.[1]), was a medieval Shafiite Sunni scholar of Islam who represents the entire realm of the Sunni world in the field of Hadith. He is also known as Shaykh al Islam.

    The Promised Messiah (as) says:
    1) In His revelations, Almighty Allah has used the term nubuwwat and risalat with reference to me hundreds of times. But it refers to the converse with God, which is frequent and contains knowledge of the unseen, nothing more. Everyone has a right to adopt an idiom, and this is the definition adopted by God that He has given the title ofnubuwwat to the frequent converse with Him. (Chashma-e-Ma‘arifat, Ruhani Khaza’in, vol. 23, p. 341)

    and what does nabi mean??

He who manifests the knowledge of the unseen from God will, by definition, be truly called a Nabi in accordance with the following verse: …He does not grant anyone ascendency over his domain of the unseen…. [except him whom He chooses as His Messenger.] (al-Jinn, 72:27)

I have no book other than the Holy Qur’an and have no Rasul other than the Holy Prophet (sa). And I believe that our Holy Prophet (sa) is Khatam-ul-Anbiya’ [Seal of the Prophets] and the Holy Qur’an is Khatam-ul-Kutub [final religious Book]. (Letter of the Promised Messiah (as), dated August 17, 1899, in al-Hakm, vol. 3, p. 29)

  5. Some of the above posts are true. The problem arises from the Hadith which is mentioned in BUkhari and Muslim, both high level hadith books. It states, “By the One in whose hand is my life, Isa Ibne Maryam will surely appear amongst YOU, as a just judge. He will break the Cross and kill the swine…..”

From this Hadith, all Muslims are hoping and waiting and keeping Jesus a.s. alive in heavens, even though all the important item in the above hadith (Breaking Cross, Killing swines, and appearing in Sahabah) are all metaphorical, not literal. The three things having been proved symbolic (not literal), the only thing left in that important Hadith is Isa Ibne Maryam. So that is also not literal. It does not mean that Isa son of Maryam a.s. will come in the world.

The prophet s.a.w.s. is Khaatam an Nabiyyeen. Means he is the super seal of the prophets. It does not mean that he is the last prophet. For “last” there is Arabic word “Aakhir”. Allah did not say that Muhammad is Aakhirun Nabiyyeen.

But we know that he was a law bearing prophet. All earlier scholars of Islam (Mohayuddin ibne Arabi, Mulla Ali Qari, Shah Waliullah Dehlavi and many others) have agreed that now, no prophet with a new law can appear after Muhammad s.a.w.s. But non-law bearing prophets can appear. That helps about the coming of an Isa a.s. in this Ummah.
Because real Isa Ibne Maryam has passed away (as per Quran) at the good age of 120 years (as per Hadith), that same old Isa can never come in this world again. But Hadith is telling, by the oath of Allah, that Isa will come in this Ummah, then he has to be a one who will be born in the Ummah.
Hazrat Aisha rz.a. had also said, “O people, Say that he (Muhammad) is Khaatam an Nabiyyeen but Do not say that there is no prophet after him.”

The Muslims have been misled by the maulvis in this subject. The Ahmadis have the following beliefs as taught by the Promised Messiah a.s.:
    1. That Jesus a.s. has died a peaceful death.
    2. Ordinary Wahi (Kalam Allah) is still being sent from Allah. Allah has not stopped speaking. But no word can come which will replace words of the Quran.
    3. That Allah sent wahi to many saints in this Ummah. They even published the Wahi in their books. There were many who got the wahi. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahamd a.s. recieved the maximum wahi, in good quality and quantity.
    4. Hazrat sahib claimed to be the promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi a.s. He invited people to Quran and Sunnah.
    5. In the Quran, it is clearly written that messengers come after the prophets. Prophets do not remain in the world for long time. After the prophets, Allah sends messengers who teach and preach the same message. It is an order in the Quran that whenever a messenger comes after the prophet, reciting the same message, the people MUST believe in him and help him. (Surah Al-Imran, last ruk’u of para 3).
    6. The prophethood of Hazrat Mirza sahib is of different kind. It is different to the type of prophets that used to appear before Muhammad s.a.w.s. He is not a direct prophet. He is an Ummatee nabi. He has been given prophethood by the blessings of the prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s.
    7. Maulvis should know that Isa a.s. was a prophet before Hazrat Muhammad s.a.w.s. He cannot be before and after Muhammad s.a.w.s. He did his duty and went away for good, forever.
    8. There is another Hadith “AbuBakr is the best man in this Ummah except that a prophet may be BORN in the Ummah.”
    WASSALAM.

  6. The non-Ahmadi Muslims seem to take only one meaning of ‘seal of prophets’ i.e. ‘last’. A seal can mean many other things than last.

And what Ahmadis believe is very logical in that while the Holy Prophet (saw), was the last law-bearing prophet, it doesn’t mean that no prophet can come after him.

After all, every religion claims that another ‘avatar’ from God Almighty will be coming towards the end of time to save humanity and lead it back to unity and the right path.

All Muslims claim that they are on this right path. If so, how come there are so many sects among them?

Therefore, how is this fragmented and disunited Muslim Umma despite believing in Prophet Muhammad (saw), and the last revelation the Holy Qur’an cannot seem to Unite?

By what means are they going to do so?

Therefore, we Ahmadis, believe that this person (avatar), finally came as professed by the Holy Prophet (saw), in the form of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. Btw, even his name means that he’s the servant of Ahmad – another name of the Holy Prophet (saw).

He never brought a new law and all his life was spent defending Islam and the name of the Holy Prophet (saw). Our Jama’at is the only one among the Muslims which is united under a Khalifa.

Re the above mention of law of punishment for blasphemy. There is no such thing in the Holy Qur’an or in the practices of the Holy Prophet (saw). Only Allah can take this responsibility since no human is a mind reader and cannot accuse another of being a non-believer. This is absolute nonsense!

If you don’t believe this look it up in the Holy Qur’an and read up on the life of the Holy Prophet and his practices.
