Having moved to Canada/US from Pakistan, what I really found surprising about Hinduism was that they do believe in one God…just a lot of demigods as well.
It’s not hard to imagine how the transition may have taken place. As Muslims we believe in the many “attributes” of God, and it seems the faiths representing Hinduism tried to picture the attributes in less abstract terms.
I’m also reminded of the saying of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) that when offering salaat one should feel that one is seeing God, and if that is not possible, to at least have the awareness that God is seeing her/him.
So, it would not take many years after such a teaching for people to start using physical symbols to represent God and His many attributes. The fact of the matter is, there exist NO 33 crore Gods.. The exact word that occurs in the Vedas for ‘crore’ is Koti (कोटी) which in many languages like Marathi literally indicate the numerical value of crore. But are we really to take that meaning?
If we go deep in the language of Sanskrit, we understand that the word Koti indeed does mean ‘crore’ but more correctly, it means ‘types’. So 33 Koti Gods means 33 types or families of Gods.
Accepting this, then who are those 33 ‘families’ of Gods which we have? Plus, do Gods like Durga, Gnpati, Skanda,etc have any place in that?

All these are ancient Sanskrit with deep meanings and very difficult to explain in English. Having said that, below is a rough translation.
Yoga- literally means to ‘unite’ – Means, to unite the body and mind- to control your body via application of mind. A Yogi, is someone who achieved this higher state.
Brahman- A very interesting and critical word. Probably the most important word in Hinduism. In many ancient Sanskrit writngs, many students asked their gurus- please explain Brahman- And Guru always begin the answer with the sentence “Brahman can not be explained, defined or understood” by our limited human mind. 🙂 OK. Here is a take. Imagine the whole universe, that means, earth (including, plants, animals you and me), sun, other planets, our milky way galaxy, and BILLIONS of other galaxies, are part of Brahman. So, is Brahman means universe? Yes, but more. Yes, because , All these universe is part of Brahman, No, because, all these universe (stars, earth, galaxies etc) will one day burn out- once their enegey is over. Or universe will end. But Brahman still exists, even AFTER universe ends. Then a new cycle happens, a new universe created. So, does Brahman means, an all powerful God (as in Allah, or Jehovah etc) who creates and destroys universe?? Answer is NO. Because, concepts like Allah and Jehowa are all powerful God, completely DISTINCT from humans and animals. Muslims, Christian God is an omnipotent entity completely separate from Humans. As per Christianity/Islam, Human is a creation (and servent) of this powerful God. But Hindu concept of Brahman is different . Brahman is NOT a different entity from humans, or animals, or plants or worms. Humans, Animal, plants or worms are all part of Brahman. In that sense I can say, I am Brahman, you can say you are Brahman, . Hense Hinduism says “Aham Brahmasti”- means I am the Brahman. Later clueless Christian missionaries translated this sentence as “I am God”. and started ridiculing hindus asking, Are you God? then why cant you fly? 🙂

Prakriti.- Means, nature. Earth, ecosystems, humans are all part of Nature or Prakriti.

Lets see. This universe, is finite. That means one day it wil end. That means, you and me will die. Plants will die. Continents will die. Earth will die. Sun will burn out. Milkyway will be burned out one day. The whole unverse will collapse one day. So since everything that we can see, is finite, or everhin that we see one day will die. So, what is the point of me and you living, or doing things now? Since whatever we do or leave behind will one day die? so what is our purpose???
So, Rishis, defined, those things in this universe that die out eventually is “Maya” or illusion. The only thing that doesn’t die out (there must be something) is called the “Truth”. So this truth is Brahman. So, our world is maya- illusion- since it will die one day.
Atma- Atma is soul. Everything will die, except Atma, Atma is part of Brahman.
Paramatman- is the ultimate soul. Lets just, say , if each individual atma (souls)attains the truth, it will be come part of Paramatman. Paramatman is again part of Brahman.

I understood that prakriti is nature. Atma is soul Ma-atama is a better soul or great leader. Parmatama is the Lord God Almighty, the Ultimate spirit.
The word Barahman was difficult but it seemed to be what you have described. And I felt a problem that GEETA teaches as if all creation is God. That is what you have also explained Brahaman as all creation is God or part of God.
We Muslims do not believe that. But we have a sect called “Wahdat al Wujood” which has similar belief. WE do not agree to that. Creator is different to the creation. That is mentioned in the very first verse of the Quran, as follows:
“All praise is for the Rabb of aalmeen (for the creator of everything, which you have also described as the Sun and MOon and Galaxies and… I will complete the list later on.
Here in this verse of the opening chapter of the Quran, the Creator is described separate from His creation. (more later, and thank you for taking the trouble to explain.)

However hindus worship in many forms of various aspects of Brahman according to their nature both as Saguna (with form) and nirguna (without form).
Deity worship in the form of Idol worship is the starting point of enhancing spiritual love to God as formless god is difficult to grasp for some people. So for hinduism it is said as a every drop of water eventually goes to a sea or bigger body of water, every form of worship eventually reaches Brahman. One who evolves spirtually and experiences this oneness with entire create himself become one with Brahman.
There is a story where an enlightened person said he was god and people around him promptly killed him saying he is blaphamous. The story goes when the person said that he is god, he is experiencing one ness with god and he saw the universe as mere illusion. When the teacher was asked how come then he was killed so easily, Teacher replied with a smile what did the people kill? They killed an illusion called body which will die eventully anyways, they cannot kil his atman the eternal being which has merged with Brahman.

Dear Thariq, what you say is true and you must also undertsand that there are 3 aspects in which humans act, tamas (ignorance), passion (rajas) and Purity(sattwa). sometimes people act out of ignorance and fear. every individual is different and must be related to in the present. There many sattwic muslims and there are many tamasic hindus, in the same way there are many sattwic hindus and tamasic muslims. All religions including Hindu religion is from God. They were started by Messengers of God. The purpose was to create a connection between God and his creation. We believe that even today a Christian, Jew or Hindu can go to paradise by acting on the good and true teachings of their own religion. As long as you believe in one God and do good deeds, God will reward you for that and not let go to waste any of your good deeds.

The punishment for apostasy from Islam is a controversial topic for Muslims living in the West and for ex-Muslims everywhere. That’s because Islam teaches that apostates are to be killed. The West values the freedoms of thought and speech, Islam does not, and these virtues have never blossomed under Islamic rule. Consequently, when asked about the Islamic law for apostates many Western Muslims do their best to cover up Islam’s edict. Motivated by conviction, or shame, they make up various defenses and say whatever they can to put your mind at ease and make Islam more acceptable to a naïve, gullible, and ignorant Western audience.
