Philanthropists end Komala’s bill ordeal

SAUDI ARABIA: Two Pakistani philanthropists have paid the hospital bills of Komala Ahmed, the cancer-stricken 12-year-old Pakistani girl, who is currently being treated at the Saudi-German Hospital in the city.

Manzur Ahmed, Komala’s father, said the two Pakistanis arrived on Wednesday evening to visit her and pay the medical bills. They were among several other well wishers who came to visit her over the past few days, said Ahmed.

Ahmed said his daughter does not appear to be responding to the current medical care. He is waiting for travel documents to travel to Pakistan for treatment at the renowned Shoukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore.

“I’m worried about the situation. I’m working to get travel documents for my two children, then complete the passport procedures to travel to Pakistan.”

Ahmed said the Shoukat Khanam Hospital has also confirmed it would provide treatment at a low cost for Komala.

He thanked Pakistan Consul General Aftab Ahmed Khokher for visiting Komala and seeking help for her.

He was also grateful to Arab News for the media coverage that helped get assistance for his daughter. “I’m not educated so I was unaware of the power of the media until Arab News published the story of my ailing daughter,” said Ahmed.

Khokher reiterated that Pakistan expatriates should contact the mission whenever they need help in distress.

She is in constant pain and has to have surgery for a cancerous tumor around her right eye. The surgery would likely see her go blind in that eye.
