TEHRAN –

Iran has strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the holy shrine of Hazrat Zeinab (SA), the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad (S), in Damascus on Friday.

A rocket struck near the shrine and killed a custodian of the site in the capital’s southern suburbs.

Reuters reported that there were conflicting reports about damage to the shrine. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists across Syria, cited sources as saying the shrine’s blue-tiled sanctuary had been hit. But a local resident told Reuters the rockets landed outside the mosque.

Foreign-sponsored rebels fighting against Bashar Asad’s government were to blame for the attack.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi called on international organizations, especially Islamic ones, to make every effort to prevent such crimes against humanity which go counter to international and Islamic laws.

Syria is experiencing civil war for 28 months, in which up to 100,000 people are believed to have died.

Recently the United Nation reported that five thousand people a month are dying in Syria’s war, which has now generated the worst refugee crisis since the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
