Polygamists Celebrate Supreme Court’s Marriage Rulings

Buzzfeed: The Supreme Court’s rulings in favor of same-sex marriage Wednesday were greeted with excitement by polygamists across the country, who viewed the gay rights victory as a crucial step toward the country’s inevitable acceptance of plural marriage.

Anne Wilde, a vocal advocate for polygamist rights who practiced the lifestyle herself until her husband died in 2003, praised the court’s decision as a sign that society’s stringent attachment to traditional “family values” is evolving.

“I was very glad… The nuclear family, with a dad and a mom and two or three kids, is not the majority anymore,” said Wilde. “Now it’s grandparents taking care of kids, single parents, gay parents. I think people are more and more understanding that as consenting adults, we should be able to raise a family however we choose.”

“We’re very happy with it,” said Joe Darger, a Utah-based polygamist who has three wives. “I think [the court] has taken a step in correcting some inequality, and that’s certainly something that’s going to trickle down and impact us.”

Noting that the court found the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional because the law denied marriage rights to a specific class of people, Darger said, “Our very existence has been classified as criminal… and I think the government needs to now recognize that we have a right to live free as much as anyone else.”

  1. Well, everybody knows at least one ‘gay’ person that is actually quite a nice guy, may be a friend even. Consequently if they ask for something, like this ‘marriage’ thing, voters may say ‘why not, let them have it’. Unfortunately not all that many persons personally know a practicing polygamist (in the West I mean). Consequently support for the gays may not automatically result in a support for polygamy. But there is always hope of course.

  2. Besides, gay marriages reduce population, polygamy does the opposite.

World knows we already are too many on the planet!

  3. Let these stupids enjoy their sure forthcoming social collapse. Sexually transmitted diseases will further spread, population will go down dramatically, new generation will be more prone to stress, pressure and violence………….They are slaves of their wishes and lust…….I see women in this whole situation are the biggest losers.

North Americans have entered an extremely dangerous and lethal syndrome of mental fantasy where they think what they do is right and will become order of the day. This is the start of self-imposed annihilation. They are just legalizing what they practice no matter the scientific and social reasons given in support are extremely irrational and harmful.
All these things happening because number is growing exponentially in the west in the name of personal freedom and gene.

So when are they campaigning for legitimating instinct? Perhaps very soon and perhaps they wont find that opportunity.

    @Amtul Q Farhat

Most parts of world where homosexuals are booming, population growth has been already on negative axis.

  4. Amtul Q Farhat: I hope you are not saying that higher number of people is going to be a problem for the earth’s resources etc?

If so, I would advise you to read Ahmadiyya jamaat literature and realize that you are completely wrong. The earth can and does provide for burgeoning populations irrespective of the speed of their increase.

As for gays, the Holy Quran instructs that they should be punished. So don’t get brainwashed by all the ‘homophobic’ rhetoric. Homosexuality is wrong, disgusting and should be condemned vehemently.

  5. Fowzia Shah, according to the Holy Qur’an, there is no specific punishment for gays other than excommunication. I’m saying this because, I heard a question asked by an anonymous gay on the programme ‘Faith Matters’ some time ago and the answer given was that for women to be confined to the home while men due to the fact that they are bread winners, generally, it would not be practical to confine them like the women and therefore they were to be warned and made aware that society was aware of their status and they should not try to misbehave….., or else.

I don’t know how far this would be applicable in today’s world, though.

But, if you or any other knows of a proper punishment in this world for such people, please enlighten me and others on this forum. It would be much appreciated if this explanation is also backed up with Qur’anic references as well as hadith, of course.

  6. People do have a point in this article. Courts do not decide on the basis of religion or dogmas – but they did against Mormons a century ago. Now they are opening up and deciding on the basis of rationale and pros on cons (but sometimes they go too far on other side, being effected by the social ideas around). Anyways, Its up to you if you can give the society and to the courts your opinion for or against, telling them adequately all the pluses and the minuses. At least they are open to listening! The question now I think is – “Are also telling you point”?

  7. Raziya Mohamedali, verse 17 of chapter 4 speaks of this punishment. In his translation of the Holy Quran, Khalifatul Maseeh the fourth ra says that the punishment should take a physical form, perhaps lashes; as appropriate in given circumstances. Huzoor ra then says that after being caught, they must be supervised. But if they repent and promise to desist in future, then they should not be harassed by imposing any restrictions on them or by constantly observing them.

You are correct that confinement to the home of women is a punishment solely for women if they commit the same crime. But Huzoor explains that this means that they can still go out but only after taking permission and while they are supervised. This is so that the lewdness does not spread in the society. But because men have to earn a living, they are to be allowed to leave their home but their punishment has to be something physical.

  8. @Raziya Muhammadi

    Shocked to read comments!
Allah has even decreed physical punishment for male homosexuals as Fauzia has referred. As such it is not for females yet social seclusion. Allah had to even appoint his messenger towards a people who had become openly gays(not Lesbians). Reason is (to me) male acts are more public, infectious and inspiring and directly affecting opposite sex attitude as well (we can see now this).

By the way do you have friends committing or addicted such abhorrent acts? If so try to advise if they listen OK if not leave them as soon as possible.
