AMMAN — Jordan border guards apprehended six members of an Israeli family after illegally crossing into Jordan, sources told The Jordan Times Thursday.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the parents and four children — aged between 8-17 — were spotted in Wadi Araba after crossing the border.

The border guards arrested and interrogated the family, then handed the six Israelis to Israeli authorities in Eilat.

A source told The Jordan Times the family belongs to an ultra-Orthodox sect of Judaism that strongly encourages early marriages among children aged under 17.

While the marriageable age is 17 in Israel, members of this Jewish sect believe that early marriage protects the social fabric of Jewish society, according to the source.

The source added that the infiltrators said they were trying to enter Jordan to reach the Canadian embassy in Amman to apply for a visa, because Israeli authorities have issued a warrant banning members of this extreme sect from leaving the country.

The source stressed that the infiltrators did not pose a threat to national security at any point.
