US support war crimes trial

Washington DC: The United States has reiterated its support to the Bangladesh government’s initiative to put to trial the crimes against humanities committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

US State Department Spokesperson Patrick Ventrell extended the assurance to Bangladesh in wake of the ‘debate’ and political standoff over the fairness of the ongoing war crimes trials. The debate was renewed after Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman was sentenced to death for war crimes on Thursday.

“We are observing how the war crimes tribunals are functioning,” he said.

  1. The story is about Bangladesh and it’s reconciliation for the wounds from war of 1971. The stamp of approval of the US dept of state is another validation of the trial. Though it may have had kinks in it’s procedures, the tribunal court is a testament to the effort for establishment of ‘due process’ in a nascent democracy.

    Mr. Rafiq’s comment is a vague generalization and certainly arguable.
