43 Indonesian hajj pilgrims die in Saudi Arabia

MAKKAH, 26 Dhul Qadah/24 Oct (IINA)- A total of 43 Indonesian pilgrims have died in Saudi Arabia this year, with most of the deaths caused by vascular diseases, the government says.

According to Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Ministry’s Integrated Hajj Computerized System (Siskohat), this year 34 Indonesian pilgrims have died from vascular diseases, six from respiratory problems, and one each of neoplasm, malnutrition and a nerve disease.

Twenty two died while in Medina, one during the flight trip from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia, and 20 others died in Makkah. Most of the deceased were male and about 30 of the deceased were over 60 years of age, and only one of the deceased was under 40.

The ministry also reported that 144,463 Indonesian pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform this year’s hajj pilgrimage rituals. This figure represents 71 percent of those who have secured hajj visas.
