KUALA LUMPUR: Peaceful assemblies can be held in stadiums as shown by Himpunan Sejuta Umat (Himpun)’s calm gathering, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Najib compared Himpun’s peaceful gathering at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday to the street demonstration by Bersih 2.0 in July and said there was a vast difference between the two.
“Congratulations to them (Himpun) as their assembly took place in a controlled manner.
“That was actually my intention when the Government offered the stadium to Bersih 2.0 to conduct their assembly.
“There is a vast difference between yesterday’s assembly and the chaos during Bersih 2.0. No one felt disturbed, pressured or unsafe during the (Himpun) gathering,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
Himpun’s peaceful gathering, he added, mirrored what the Government wanted with the amendment to the Police Act which is to allow for peaceful demonstrations.
