What a Parentage?

According to media Reports Pakistan President Zardari has consented to use his name as the father’s name in official documentation for many children of unknown parentage. The move is an attempt to legalise the status of a large number of children who were born legally but whose parentage is unknown, a majority of such children arrived at welfare centres after losing their parents in the 2005 earthquake and last year’s devastating floods. NADRA, the data registration authority of Pakistan, for many years, was at loss about filling the registration forms for such children as it is mandatory to mention the name of the father and mother to issue the national identity card. When, through media reports, it came to the knowledge of Mr Zardari, he voluntarily offered his name to be used in the father’s name box for such people.

In order to deal with the sensitive and complex issue of children of unknown parentage, NADRA approached different schools of Islamic thought. In response the name of Adam as father and Hawwa, as mother were opined by some such schools. Up till now Pakistan has no law on the rights of such children, including their financial entitlement or inheritance.  In her recent speech at Sydney, Miss Fatima Bhutto has revealed that now Mr Zardari has raised his level of earnings much more and is known as Mr110%. Will these children be lucky enough to get the share of enormous wealth of Mr 110%.  Probably legal experts will soon decide.  After the decision of legal experts President 110% would still continue to be the father of these children or will renounce his fatherhood will be an interesting moment to watch.
