16 suspects arrested in alleged plot to poison Indonesian police with cyanide

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesian authorities say 16 suspects have been arrested who were plotting to kill police with cyanide.

Col. Boy Rafli Amar, a national police spokesman, said the suspects were arrested since Friday in the capital Jakarta, Borneo, Sulawesi and the Java towns of Bandung and Pekalongan.

The alleged plot involved spreading cyanide in police dormitories and canteens. Bottled water was also to be used as a delivery method.

He said Monday the arrests were based on confessions from people captured in raids in Central Sulawesi after two police officers were slain earlier this month.

An ongoing security crackdown has been given new momentum following an April suicide bombing at a mosque packed with police in West Java that wounded 30.
