King Mswati’s 16th Wife Leaves Marriage After Going for Months Without Seeing him

  • Nomcebo Zuma reportedly left King Mswati’s polygamous marriage after months.
  • Loneliness led the 16th wife to return to her South African home.

Just months after a highly publicized union, Nomcebo Zuma, the 22-year-old daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, has reportedly left her polygamous marriage to King Mswati III of Eswatini.

Citing prolonged periods without seeing her husband, sources close to the royal household, confined to South African news sources, reported that the young Inkhosikati (Queen) has returned to her family home in Nkandla, South Africa, casting a spotlight on the intricate and often challenging realities of royal polygamy.

The marriage, which saw Nomcebo become King Mswati’s 16th wife, was formalized in September 2024 during the annual Umhlanga Reed Dance, a traditional ceremony where the monarch often selects new brides.

The union garnered significant attention across Southern Africa, not only due to the King’s status as one of the world’s last absolute monarchs but also given the prominence of the Zuma family. At the time, Eswatini officials had presented the marriage as a union driven by love, a narrative that is now being re-evaluated in light of Nomcebo’s reported departure.

According to reports from News of the South and Swaziland News, Nomcebo’s decision to leave, known in Eswatini custom as “kwemuka,” stems from the emotional strain of loneliness and the logistical impracticalities of being one of many wives.

“I haven’t seen my husband in months,” Nomcebo reportedly confided in family members, highlighting a profound lack of personal connection within the sprawling royal household.

It’s speculated that as the King’s most recent bride, she might have anticipated a period of heightened attention and closeness. However, with an estimated eleven wives and over 50 children, the demands on King Mswati’s time are immense, making consistent, individual attention for each consort an almost impossible feat, even with a carefully structured rotation.

The departure has reportedly prompted a royal delegation from Eswatini to travel to Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, to negotiate Nomcebo’s return.

Neither the Zuma family nor the Eswatini royal palace has issued a formal statement on the matter, leaving the situation shrouded in quiet contemplation.

King Mswati III, 56, has long faced scrutiny for his lavish lifestyle and his adherence to polygamy, a tradition that often draws criticism when contrasted with the economic struggles faced by many of his subjects.

Whether Nomcebo will return to the royal palace remains uncertain, but her move has undeniably stirred fresh conversations across the region about choice, culture, and the place of women in contemporary monarchies.
