Therefore, it is hoped that the police will not only handle the legal process against the perpetrators in the field, but also investigate the intellectual actors who coordinate the spread of hatred through social media.

Until now, the authorities have not been fully able to handle the problems in the field, especially those that occur on social media, which often contain provocative comments and calls to spread hatred.

Analysis from an Islamic Law Perspective

In Islamic law, acts of vandalism against places of worship or religious symbols are strictly prohibited and considered a despicable act. Some of the related principles of Islamic law include:

  • Maintaining Peace and Social Harmony

Islam teaches the importance of living in peace with others regardless of religious differences. Destruction of places of worship, especially with the aim of offending or threatening certain groups, is contrary to the basic principles of Islam which encourage people to maintain peace and respect each other. This is guided by the letter (Surat Al Kafirun verse (6)

لَكُمْ دِيْنُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِيْنِ

Meaning: For you your religion, and for me my religion.

  • Criminal Law in Islam

The act of vandalism against public property or facilities in Islam can be punished accordingly, depending on the intention and consequences of the act. In this context, vandalism of a mosque is clearly a serious offense that not only damages a place of worship, but can also trigger social and religious tensions. The Qur’an mentions the Qur’an in Surah Al-A’raf verse (56) which reads:

وَلَا تُفْسِدُوْا فِى الْاَرْضِ بَعْدَ اِصْلَاحِهَا وَادْعُوْهُ خَوْفًا وَّطَمَعًاۗ اِنَّ رَحْمَتَ اللّٰهِ قَرِيْبٌ مِّنَ الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ ۝٥٦

Meaning: Do not do mischief on the earth after it has been set in order. Pray to Him with fear and hope. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is very close to those who do good.

From several things that underlie the problems that the author raises. The author is of the opinion that the actions taken by the local community both in Islamic law and Indonesian state law, these actions are not justified.

Because the community should not immediately enforce the law in their own way (taking the law into their own hands) to destroy the mosque, but it should be discussed peacefully. Because in Islamic law and Indonesian law such actions are prohibited.

The author believes that if the community leaves the case to resolve it themselves, it is likely that other conflicts will arise which could make the problem worse.

Therefore, the role of law enforcement officers and local government is to immediately take over the process of resolving the conflict between the community and the Ahmadiyah group.
