TA look of wariness was visible in the eyes of a number of women sitting on the terrace of their house in Nyalindung Hamlet in Ngamplang Village, Garut Regency, West Java, when Tempo journalists visited there on November 7, 2024.
The member of the Indonesian Ahmadiyah Congregation (JAI) kept an eye on Tempo as he approached the 9 x 10 square meter mosque that looked unfinished. “If I were here, nothing would happen. Don’t worry, bro,” said Sudrajat, a Ngamplang Village official who accompanied Tempo to Nyalindung Village.
Nyalindung Village is right under the Garut-Tasikmalaya Highway. There are 80 families of Ahmadiyah followers here. They are spread across two neighborhood associations (RT). They no longer remember that Indonesia has religious tolerance and the world celebrates Tolerance Day every November 16, 2024.
The head of the local Community Association, Ali Nugraha, said that the psychological condition of his residents who are members of the Ahmadiyah congregation has been quite depressed since the sealing of their mosque on July 2, 2024. The local government sealed it on the grounds that it was unlicensed. “The Ahmadiyah residents below are screaming. They have no property, and their mosque is about to be confiscated. Their psychology is depressed,” said Ali, Thursday, November 7, 2024.
