SETARA noted that churches were the most disturbed with 21 places of worship: 18 Protestant churches and 3 Catholic churches.

tirto.id – Setara Institute noted that 50 places of worship were disturbed and deprived of their right to freedom of religion and belief throughout 2022 in Indonesia. This number has increased dramatically compared to the last few years: 44 (2021), 24 (2020), 31 (2019), 20 (2018) and 16 (2017).”The trend of violations in 2022 shows that cases of disturbances to places of worship have continued to experience a significant increase in the last six years,” said Setara Institute’s Freedom of Religion/Belief researcher, Syera Anggreini Buntara, in a written statement, Tuesday (31/1/2023).The research results are presented in an annual report issued by Setara Institute. This is the result of monitoring violations on freedom of religion and belief (KBB) throughout 2022.Syera said the church was the most disturbed with 21 places of worship: 18 Protestant churches and 3 Catholic churches. The rest occurred in 16 mosques, 6 monasteries, 4 prayer rooms, 2 temples, and 1 place of worship for adherents of a belief.

Setara Institute recorded 175 incidents with 333 acts of violation of freedom of religion and belief throughout 2022. From that number, 168 acts were committed by state administrators, while 165 acts were carried out by civilians. Most of the actions taken by state administrators were carried out by local governments (47 actions). Then followed by the police (23 actions), Satpol PP (17 actions), state educational institutions (14 actions), and Forkopimda (7 actions). As for the actions taken by civilians, most of them were carried out by citizens (94 actions), individuals (30 actions), religious organizations (16 actions), MUI (16 actions), and the Forum for Religious Harmony/FKUB (10 actions).

“The inclusion of FKUB as the top five non-state actors with the most KBB violations shows that instead of carrying out the role of facilitating the construction of houses, quite a number of FKUBs are massively passive and actually complicate the requirements for building places of worship,” said Syera. There are five types of acts of violation of freedom of religion and belief that are most commonly committed by state administrators: discrimination (40 actions), discriminatory policies (25 actions), business prohibition (18 actions), refusal to establish a place of worship (13 actions), and suspicion of blasphemy ( 10 acts). Then, Syera said there were six acts that were mostly carried out by civilians: refusal to establish places of worship (38 actions), intolerance (37 actions), reporting blasphemy of religion (17 actions), prohibition of worship (15 actions), refusal to lecture (14 actions), and destruction of places of worship (7 actions).“Refusal of lectures has emerged for the first time in the top five violations of KBB by non-state actors. The rejection of lectures has increased very rapidly compared to the last three years, from 1 event each in 2020 and 2021 to 14 events in 2022,” added Syera.Throughout 2022, the SETARA Institute noted that the most frequent violations of KBB were individuals (41 incidents), citizens (34 incidents), Christians (33 incidents; 30 incidents were experienced by Christians and 3 incidents were experienced by Catholics), businessmen (19 incidents), students (13 events), Muslims (12 events), Buddhists (7 events), the Indonesian Ahmadiyya Congregation (6 events), and adherents of the faith (6 events).
