MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MALANG—The Tarjih Assembly was established in 1927 as a result of the decision of the 16th Muhammadiyah Congress in Pekalongan. At that time, the Hoofdbestuur Muhammadiyah was held by KH. Ibrahim replaces KH. Ahmad Dahlan. University of Muhammadiyah Malang lecturer Pradana Boy said that the idea of forming a religious fatwa institution Muhammadiyah was born from KH. Mr. Mansur.

“The idea of institutionalizing a fatwa or religious ijtihad came from KH. Mr. Mansur. So it is not wrong to say that the idea of the Tarjih Council came from KH. Mas Mansur,” said Pradana Boy at the Santri Scholar Forum organized by the Muhammadiyah Tarjih Center at Ahmad Dahlan University on Tuesday (11/01).

Pradana Boy mentioned two factors for the establishment of the Tarjih Council, namely the internal one. Along with the expansion of the organization which sucked in many members, Muhammadiyah’s social and charitable activities also increased tremendously and successfully, especially in the fields of education, sponsorship and social services, da’wah and other activities. The formation of the Tarjih Council was deemed appropriate because it was an institution designed to accommodate conflicts and differences of opinion.

This is the reason why it is named the “Tarjih” Assembly instead of the “Tasyri’” Assembly. In fact, the name of the assembly proposed at the Muhammadiyah Congress in Pekalongan was originally the Tasyri’ Assembly. Pradana Boy explained that the term “Tasyri'” is too high, as if it equates to the nature of the function of Allah and His Messenger, so the word “Tarjih” was chosen because it is in accordance with its spirit which is to accommodate differences of opinion.

“Because Muhammadiyah is growing wider, its mass is increasing, there are various Muhammadiyah members, like it or not, there is a diversity of religious thoughts within the organization. Therefore, the establishment of the Tarjih Council has the role of accommodating differences of opinion,” explained the member of the Tarjih Council and Tajdid of the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership in East Java.

Second, external factors. The existence of the Tarjih Council cannot be separated from the presence of Ahmadiyah. The early development of Ahmadiyah in Indonesia actually received a positive response from Muhammadiyah, because both of them had the same struggle , namely: to purify faith and modernize Islam. Even one of the Ahmadiyah figures, Ali Ahmad Baig, was a speaker in Muhammadiyah internal discussions.

On July 5, 1928, Hoofdbestuur Muhammadiyah then issued an official declaration which was sent to all its branches. One of its messages is the prohibition of spreading any knowledge or views of the Ahmadiyya. The letter emphatically stated that you should reject the teachings of Ahmadiyah, or if you don’t, you must leave the Muhammadiyah organization.

“One of the births of the Tarjih Council was the penetration of Ahmadiyah into Muhammadiyah. By the researchers, this was used as an external factor for the birth of the Tarjih Council,” said the Assistant Chancellor of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
