Imparsial: The Trial of the Sintang Ahmadiyah Mosque Attack Case is just a joke

A number of Ahmadiyah residents in Harapan Jaya Hamlet, Balai Harapan Village, Temunak District, Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan after the mosque where they worshiped was sealed ahead of the 76th Indonesian Independence Day. [Dock. Indonesian Ahmadiyya Congregation (JAI)] – Imparsial Director Ghufron Mabruri assessed that the trial process for the destruction of the Miftahul Huda Mosque belonging to the Ahmadiyah community in Balai Harapan Village, Sintang Regency , West Kalimantan (West Kalimantan) at the Pontianak District Court (PN) was just a slapstick trial.

Ghufron said that the judges and prosecutors at the Pontianak District Court actually judged the beliefs held by the Ahmadiyah community, so they did not focus on the crime of destroying mosques and inciting violence by the 21 defendants.

“The judicial process against the perpetrators of the destruction of the Sintang Mosque is more accurately called a joke, which from the start did not seriously make the justice process enforced by the judiciary,” said Ghufron, Thursday (6/1/2022).

In the last trial on December 30, 2021, the public prosecutor only demanded that the perpetrator be sentenced to six months in prison, reduced for the time the defendant was in custody and with an order that the defendant remain in custody.

“After the light verdict on the perpetrators, the Supreme Court, the Judicial Commission, including the Prosecutor’s Commission must immediately make proactive efforts to evaluate thoroughly, including if there is a violation,” he stressed.

He called this trial a bad legal practice for cases of intolerance towards minorities which could set a bad precedent for the law in the future.

“This is important so that incidents of intolerance do not happen again in Indonesia, because this happens again and again because the institution that is supposed to work properly is not working properly,” concluded Ghufron.

The Religious Freedom Advocacy Team has also reported the alleged violation of the code of ethics of the court process and the request for monitoring by the Judicial Commission (KY) yesterday.
