Former soccer world champion Mesut Özil has revealed who he wants to vote for in the federal elections. On September 26th, he would vote for the Team Todenhöfer party, founded by bestselling author and peace activist Jürgen Todenhöfer.
Özil posted a photo with the 80-year-old on Twitter for a “meeting with Germany’s bravest politician”. He stood behind him when he had a difficult time at the World Cup in Russia three years ago. “Now I’m behind him,” added Özil.
Todenhöfer reacted shortly afterwards and wrote on Twitter that he and Özil would also plan a book together. “It will be a surprise.” As a Christian Democrat, the publicist was a member of the Bundestag from 1972 to 1990, but left the CDU last year.
The 92-time national player Özil had resigned from the DFB selection after quarrels about a controversial photo with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the following preliminary round at the 2018 World Cup. The 32-year-old midfielder, who was born in Gelsenkirchen, moved from Arsenal to Fenerbahce Istanbul at the beginning of the year.
Most recently, following the de facto change in power in Afghanistan, the publicist declared negotiations with the militant Islamist Taliban to be necessary. “Yes, of course,” said Todenhöfer on Wednesday in response to a question on Deutschlandfunk. Now is the hour of diplomacy. Germany, with its traditional friendship with the country, is particularly in demand. “Now we need clever diplomacy.” Todenhöfer welcomed the fact that the German ambassador to Afghanistan, Markus Potzel, wanted to speak to Taliban representatives in the Gulf emirate of Qatar. But he added: “He would have to go to Kabul.”
The former CDU member of the Bundestag, who repeatedly traveled to war and crisis areas, sees a “certain chance” that the Taliban will not take revenge on Afghans who worked for foreign armed forces or organizations. “Nobody knows. And everyone has to hope so, ”said the 80-year-old. The Islamists must be interested in stability. They saw that their previous strategy towards their own people had been a catastrophe.
The party “Team Todenhöfer – The Justice Party” was founded last year by Jürgen Todenhöfer (80). From 1972 to 1990 he sat for the CDU in the German Bundestag. According to the party website, he sees the current “ruling” politicians as “warmongers, racists, lobbyists and hypocrites”. The party wants to end all military operations, promote reconciliation between East and West and build one million climate-friendly apartments every year.
In addition, the parental allowance is to be extended to three years, party donations are to be limited to 5,000 euros and the division of society is to be ended.
- Global climate policy that relies on “cheap energies”
- Abolition of all nuclear weapons worldwide
- “Take in fewer refugees, but treat those who have been taken in better”
- Abolition of church tax, simplification of tax laws
- Reducing bureaucracy by a third while preserving jobs
- Boycott of the Beijing Olympics
He would consider a result of six percent “little”, he told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. Political scientists consider this to be completely utopian. Karl-Rudolf Korte spoke of a “loss of reality” and “self-euphoria”. Wolfgang Schroeder diagnosed “prepotent behavior”. He predicts Todenhöfer a result of “less than one percent” because: “What should motivate people to choose a complete outsider?”
