Jakarta: Additional 6 people have been named as suspects by the West Kalimantan Regional Police for attacking a house of worship belonging to the Indonesian Ahmadiyah Congregation (JAI) in Balai Harapan Village, Temunak Area, Sintang Regency.
“There are 22 suspects in total,” West Kalimantan Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Donny Charles Go said here on Wednesday.
According to the police official, the suspects were charged with Article 170 of the Criminal Code on Assault.
As a result, they are facing a sentence of up to five years and six months behind bars.
Chaos broke out around JAI’s Miftahul Huda Mosque in Balai Harapan Village, Sintang, on September 3. Hundreds of people were seen destroying buildings, including the house of worship.
As many as 300 TNI-Polri personnel were then deployed by the Indonesian government to secure the location. There were no casualties in the incident, but the house of worship was damaged.
The Ahmadiyah congregation, totaling 72 people or 20 families, have been evacuated. Officials suspect that the group that contributed to the destruction of the house of worship amounted to 200 people.

The danger here is that the Ahmadi-Muslims, who needed protection, will remain internally displaced for years, just like in Lombok, Indonesia. These displaced persons should be assisted to return home as soon as possible.
