He has lost his job due to the coronavirus pandemic, and said: “If I knew this was going to happen, I would not have had so many kids.”

Zeher, who lives in the city of Diyarbakir in the south-eastern Turkish province of the same name, has 19 children between his two wives.

And although he and his wives love their huge family, he said it is a struggle to make ends meet.

He said the pandemic has left him unable to find work and is even struggling to feed his family.

In Turkey, polygamy is illegal but it is possible to get around the law by only marrying a second wife religiously, but not registering it as a legal marriage.

A man who wants to have more than one wife will have an Islamic marriage, but not a registry office marriage, then live together as man and wives, while at the same time avoiding legal sanctions.

They admitted they did not get along at first but are now like siblings and even support each other in the crowded house.

Zeher’s first wife Dilber, mother of 10 children, said: “At first I was jealous of his newly-married wife and even a little sad, but now we are like sisters.

“She has children and so do I. Her children are mine and mine are hers.”

The financial difficulties which have meant there is often not enough food on the table, have also meant four of the girls and one boy are unable to go to school, and the family had to take one of their Year 7 girls out of school too.

The 19 children, who often have to go to bed without eating, are hoping the local authorities will extend a helping hand.

Zeher said: “I am appealing to the state, the prime minister, and the president. We need them to protect us. We are living miserably, if we do not get help soon we could all die of hunger.”

  1. Once upon a time I met a Ghanaian Alhaji who had 44 kids. I met him again after several years and I asked him how many kids he now had. He answered “44′. I responded ‘how come, that you told me years ago’. ‘family planning’ … he whispered.

Apparently this father here never heard of that option yet…
