Hundreds of Iraqi protesters have tried to storm the US embassy in Baghdad following US airstrikes this week that killed 25 fighters from an Iran-backed Shia group in Iraq.
Shouting “Down, Down USA!” the crowd tried to push inside the embassy grounds, hurling water bottles and smashing security cameras outside.

The US military carried out the strikes on Sunday against the Iranian-backed Kataeb Hezbollah, calling it retaliation for last week’s killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that it blamed on the group.

Tuesday’s attempted embassy storming took place after mourners held funerals for the fighters killed in a Baghdad neighbourhood, after which they marched on to the heavily fortified Green Zone and kept walking till they reached the embassy.

Security guards were seen retreating to the inside of the embassy. Protesters also were seen hanging yellow flags belonging to the Kataeb Hezbollah on the walls of the embassy.

  1. Is it so difficult to understand? Just because some Iraqis do not want a too strong influence of Iran in their country does not mean they want American strong arm tactics. Anyway, the US Embassy is like a self-contained fortress in Baghdad. Why and what for do they need thousands of staff? How many visas are they issueing these days (during the ‘Muslim ban’)?

I just to walk along the walls of the US Embassy during my days in the ‘Green Zone’ (2003 – 2011). It is huge. I used to walk to an American military base for lunch. OK, I should not complain, I got free lunch (not very good), and the American Ice Cream was fine.

  2. The outside security of the US Embassy during my days used to be manned by Columbian mercenaries. The US did not want to endanger their own. The US marines were inside.

  3. Most Arab Muslim do bot want US or Christian live in Arab land as their Prophet said:

Sahih Muslim 4366—“ I will expel the Jews and Christian from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim”
    .
But King of Saudi Arabia do not follow his Prophet, but he wants US stay there for its protection

    • Most? I am aware of only Saudi Arabia not permitting Christian churches (yet). There are plenty of churches in Jordan for instance, even new ones.
