Law against ‘religiously influenced clothing’ exempts male Sikh and Jewish headwear

Austrian MPs have approved a law aimed at banning the headscarf in primary schools, a measure proposed by the ruling rightwing government.
The text refers to any “ideologically or religiously influenced clothing which is associated with the covering of the head”.
Representatives of both parts of the governing coalition, the centre-right People’s party (ÖVP) and the far-right Freedom party (FPÖ), have made it clear that despite its wide description, the law is targeted at the Islamic headscarf.
The FPÖ education spokesman, Wendelin Mölzer, said the law was “a signal against political Islam” while the ÖVP MP Rudolf Taschner said the measure was necessary to free girls from subjugation.
The government said the patka head covering worn by Sikh boys and the Jewish kippa would not be affected. Medical bandages and protection from rain or snow are also not covered by the law approved on Wednesday.
Austria’s official Muslim community organisation, IGGÖ, has condemned the proposals as “shameless” and a “direct assault on the religious freedom of Austrian Muslims”. The organisation has signalled that it will seek to challenge the validity of the law at Austria’s constitutional court.
The government has already said it expects the law to face legal challenges, since similar legislation affecting schools is normally passed with a two-thirds majority. In this instance almost all opposition MPs voted against the measure, with some accusing the government of focusing on garnering positive headlines rather than child welfare.

Both Sikhs and Jews are in small numbers, whereas Muslims are increasing, and rapidly. They do present a concern for the natives, however peaceful some claim to be. Introducing massive numbers of people from other parts of the world with a different culture is bound to cause problems, particularly since they are reluctant to integrate, and want the natives to accommodate them. Living in their own close-knit communities, speaking a different language, wearing different clothes, some which cover them completely, and now we are seeing very young children adopting the same uniform, makes them aliens. The recent influx of refugees has added to the problems. And the knowledge that there are certain factions within the Islamic world who are keen to make everyone follow Islam is also not welcome. Therefore, a child with a head covering which is symbolic of all the aforementioned, will cause controversy. The fact that the Mother Mary is portrayed with a similar head covering is not relevant, as that was the dress that was worn in those times, and while in the Muslim world the dress has hardly changed, the rest of the world has moved on. The world is constantly changing, but changes involving newcomers into any society has to be a slow process, it cannot work overnight. And the larger the number, the more problematic it will be. We are seeing this at the present time, and the consequences are very worrying.
I think the vast majority of immigrants, including Muslim immigrants, come to ‘take part’ in the ‘new country’s economy’. They are happy to progress. Yes, there are those who are ‘more Islamic’ than in Muslim countries, especially in UK. Recently, in Sheraton Hotel in Lombok, Indonesia, I saw a group of ‘super Islamist dressers’, (men and women) including Burka for ladies. They were more ‘Islamic’ than all locals. and they were from the UK. It seems they were from a UK based Islamic NGO. (being from an NGO, why did they need to stay in Sheraton? There are cheaper hotels around).
What do you expect from the so called civilised Austrians? They must learn to respect and tolerate those who are different. Multiculturalism is not about integration but about cultural plurality. It is not about separation but about respect and the deepening awareness of Unity in Diversity. Each culture will maintain its own intrinsic value and at the same time would be expected to contribute to the benefit of the whole society. Multiculturalism can accommodate diversity of all kinds – cultural, philosophical and religious – so that we can create a world without conflict and strife. No one has any problem when: Jews keep beards and wear their traditional caps Christian priests and nuns wear their religious outfits Buddhist monks wear orange robes Sikhs keep beards and wear turbans Indian aunties wear Sarees (cross streets and hang out in Wal-Mart) Yeah but if any Muslim male keeps beard or if any Muslim girl wears hijab then everyone has problem. It’s Freedom when you go naked but it’s extremism when you wear hijab – just plain hypocrisy! Looking at the case of France, a major secular nation, I believe it is also not allowing women freedom by not letting her to wear her choice of clothing as it supposedly “clashes with French secular values”
Muslim community needs Masajid, state funded Muslim schools, Halal meat, sharia laws, time off for Friday afternoon prayers, two official religious holidays per year and Muslim cemeteries. Native Brits must learn to respect and tolerate those who are different. Don’t these hypocrites idiots know what their ancestors did to Native American Indians they slaughtered 150 millions of Native American Indians! and also do they know that Great Britain invaded 80% countries around the world? They should call them terrorist first and as well call their ancestors terrorist! British did the same to Native American Indians and sadly they still treat Native American Indians badly! So Americans Indians know how you Muslims feel! They stole Indian land and killed 150 millions of Indians the British did! They were forced to go to the white man’s school and learn the language, culture and faith of the white man. Inspite of that, they are still the under dogs of the American society.
n can assume the role of accommodation and concern for all peoples, for our planet and indeed for our survival. Multi-culturalism is even more important and crucial after 9/11 and 7/7. Muslim youths are also likely to feel alienated by a focus on shared Brutishness, rather than multicultural diversity. Rather than promoting a single British “us” teaching should acknowledge that “us” can be diverse and plural. Children should be encouraged to explore differences in appearance, history and religion to reduce social and educational fears.
