Israeli measures in Jerusalem are aggravating the situation further to a degree that is affecting not only the Palestinian territories, but also the local scene in Jordan.
Tensions were apparent in the Lower House of Parliament’s session convened on Monday to discuss measures by the Israeli occupation authorities to close the Bab Al Rahmah (Gate of Mercy) at Al Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest shrine to Muslims all over the world, which is under the Hashemite Custodianship.
The session flared into shouting matches, a fight between deputies in addition to accusations of betrayal due to speculation about an imminent deal to sell out occupied Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause. This is coupled with a lot of speculation among the public about pressure being exerted on Jordan to accept the so-called “deal of the century” to liquidate the Palestinian cause and settle Palestinian refugees outside their homeland.
The majority of deputies and the public know that Jordan, under its Hashemite leadership, has never spared any effort to support the just cause of Palestine and Jerusalem’s Muslim and Christian holy sites. The cause of Palestine has always been at the top of the agenda of His Majesty King Abdullah’s meetings with world leaders, and has been the main theme of his speeches at various forums around the globe. This is due to the fact that it is a just cause that all justice-loving people around the world should support, and due to the fact that Jordan is the most affected country by the injustices committed against the Palestinian people directly after the Palestinian people themselves. Jordan is the biggest host of Palestinian refugees and has stakes in all subjects of negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians in the stalled peace talks.
The pressure on Jordan is growing day by day due to talk about this imminent “deal of the century”, which is expected to be announced by US President Donald Trump’s administration with total disregard to the principles of justice and the rights of the Palestinian people. There are fears that Jordan will again be paying the heaviest price as happened in other cases. Such speculation has to be brought to an end by transparent talk about the deal of the century, which some fear is being prepared behind closed doors in Washington under the supervision of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who, despite being a relentless pro-Israeli supporter, is charged with preparing a “peace” deal that is only expected to deal a heavy blow to the Palestinian people, thus also affecting the already tense situation in Jordan.
Israeli escalatory measures have to stop and Israel has to know that, as an occupying power, it has its limits and has to respect international law in areas under its occupation, particularly in the Holy City of Jerusalem.
And people around the world have to know that “peace” deals cannot get concocted behind closed doors, to be imposed on the weaker parties to serve the interests of mighty lobby groups and subjugated leaderships.
Despite the arrogance of power and conspiracies, Palestine will never die. Palestine will live on, so will Jordan, which will continue to fight for Palestinian rights as it has been doing all the time, namely the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on their national soil west of the Jordan River with Jerusalem as its capital.
Jordan still has faith that this can be done through peaceful means aiming to establish justice with the support of all peace-loving forces on the face of this planet, without any extortionist measures aiming to wreak havoc with more parts of the Arab region.
