Indonesia earthquake: Drivers evacuate their cars in Bali

The 6.9 magnitude tremor was fairly shallow, striking just 18 miles underground, which caused catastrophic damage to thousands of buildings and triggered power cuts.

About 1,000 tourists are being evacuated from the nearby Gili islands and more flights are being laid on to get them to home safety as quick as possible.

Video footage from Bali, to the west of Lombok where two were confirmed dead after tremors struck, showed people running from their homes screaming.

There have been more than 130 aftershocks since the quake hit on Sunday morning and a tsunami warning was also issued – although this was lifted after a few hours.

The huge quake comes just a week after another hit Lombok, which killed at least 16 people.

8.20am update: Indonesia is a hotbed for geological activity

Indonesia sits on the active Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

While the volcanoes in Indonesia are among the most active of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.

8.00am update: Huge queues have started to form at Lombok’s airport as tourists cut their holidays short

Extra flights from Lombok have been added to the schedule to help tourists leave, according to the Garuda Indonesia airline.

AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes tweeted that the budget airline would try to lay on extra flights, while Indonesian budget carriers Lion Air and Citilink said there had been a jump in demand for outbound flights from Lombok and Bali.

“I was at the rooftop of my hotel and the building started swaying very hard. It felt like two metres to the left, then two metres to the right, I could not stand up,” said Gino Poggiali, a 43-year-old Frenchman, who was with his wife and two children, at the Lombok airport.

His wife Maude, 44, said the family were on Bali for the first quake and Lombok for the second.
