AMMAN — Qatar on Wednesday announced that it would provide 10,000 jobs for Jordanians in the Gulf state, in addition to a package of investments in infrastructure projects in Jordan valued at $500 million.

The assistance was announced during a meeting between His Majesty King Abdullah and Qatari Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Al Thani in Amman, a Royal Court statement said.

During the meeting, held at Al Husseiniya Palace in Amman, the deputy PM conveyed greetings of Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani to the King.

His Majesty and the Qatari official also discussed latest regional developments, stressing the importance of increasing efforts to fight terrorism within a holistic approach.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE pledged early on Monday $2.5 billion in support for Jordan’s economy, which they declared at the end of a four-way summit in Mecca.

Qatar was the only GCC country that did not make good on delivering its share in a $5 billion grant to Jordan ($1.25 billion), which was supposed to finance development projects in the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE paid their shares in full during the span of the grant, which expired last year.

The revived Gulf aid came after Jordan witnessed massive, peaceful protests during the fasting month of Ramadan, objecting to an income tax bill and high fuel prices in particular and economic policies in general.

The government of Hani Mulki resigned as a result and Omar Razzaz was designated to form a new government.
