A member of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, known for its anti-Muslim rhetoric, has surprised observers by converting to Islam.
Arthur Wagner sat on the party’s executive committee in the state of Brandenburg but recently stepped down for reasons he says are unrelated.
The 48-year-old, who is still a member of the party, told one newspaper that it was a “private matter”.
On its website, the AfD proclaims that “Islam does not belong in Germany”.
AfD supporters have regularly held anti-Islam rallies, and in last year’s federal elections the party used posters depicting housewives in niqab (face veils) to press home its message.
But a spokesman for the party in Brandenburg has insisted that Mr Wagner’s conversion is “no problem” for the party.
“Religion is a private matter. We support the constitutional right of religious freedom,” Daniel Friese was quoted as saying.

Mr Wagner, who is of Russian origin, previously belonged to German chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.
However in a video published in 2017, he is shown saying that although he had once been an admirer of Mrs Merkel, her decision to open the door to hundreds of thousands of migrants during the 2015-16 crisis had proved he was “totally wrong”.
He claimed Germany had “mutated into another country” as a result.
Mr Wagner was also listed as previously belonging to a group called “Christians in the AfD”.
The AfD won its first parliamentary seats in the last election, becoming the third party with 12.6% of the vote.

(CNN) A German far-right politician, whose party claims “Islam does not belong to Germany,” has converted to Islam and resigned his post.
Arthur Wagner, a leading member of Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the eastern state of Brandenburg, left his position on the party’s state executive committee on January 11 citing “personal reasons,” according to Andreas Kalbitz, AfD’s chairman AfD in the state.
Kalbitz told CNN that he only learned about Wagner’s conversion in a telephone conversation with him a few days later.
“I was very surprised,” he said. “He has been very active in the Christian wing of the party.”
Wagner was first elected as an AfD representative in 2015 and was a member of the state committee responsible for churches and religious communities.
Kalbitz said there was “no pressure from the party” for Wagner to resign. “The party supports freedom of religion,” he said.
Wagner did not respond to multiple requests for comment from CNN. He previously told German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel that his conversion was a “private matter” but that his party had not pressured him to step down.
Originally formed as an anti-euro party in 2013, the AfD has more recently campaigned on an anti-immigrant, anti-Islam platform, strongly criticizing the decision to allow more than a million refugees into Germany in 2015. The party came third in last year’s federal election, winning 12.6% of the vote.
One of the AfD’s key’s principles is that “Islam does not belong to Germany.” It is one of four doctrines stated on the homepage of the AfD’s Brandenburg branch.
Speaking at a press conference a week before the federal elections, then co-chair of the AfD Alexander Gauland said that orthodox Islam is “incompatible” with “the principles of the modern, secular, free and democratic law-bound state.”
“The growing Islamization of Germany poses an urgent challenge for its public and state order, cultural identity and the internal peace of our country,” Gauland said.

According to the Holy Quran, all children are born Muslims, it is their parents who make them Jew, Christian or others. This is one of the many reasons why now western peoples are reverting to Islam on their own free will. Through out the history, Muslims never forced non-Muslims to accept Islam. This is the main reason why Muslims lost Spain and India.
The beauty of Islam is that it is a religion which appeals to common sense. There is no blind belief or dogmatism in Islam. The fundamentals of Islam are simple, straightforward and easy to understand.
If Islam is so bad, then why is it the WORLD’S FASTEST GROWING RELIGION! It is also one of the youngest religions. However no matter how hard everyone tries to give Islam a bad name, it will be twice as more populated. So let’s get straight to the point yeah?, Basically Islam is the most hated religion I don’t know why hmm maybe because it is also the most fastest growing religion and 2nd largest but no one will be able to stop this religion from growing.
A vast majority of people in this world just want to live their lives with their families and friends, and don’t give a hoot about what other people do, as long as they can go on with their families and friends. I find it almost impossible to believe that most Muslims want to kill people who don’t share their views. The matter at hand is how to change the mindset of people so a higher percentage does not turn to violence. One should not lump all individuals of any particular Faith in with the violent actions of a few misguided individuals who USE Religion to justify their violent actions. Every now and then a Muslim kills in the US and some people jump on ALL Muslims, as though WHITES, CHRISTIANS or otherwise, do not kill. They forget that non-Muslim killing far outnumbers Muslim killing in the US. They call for the expulsion of Muslims. The BEST SOLUTION would be for all FOREIGNERS to go back to their roots and return the country to the original AMERICAN NATIVES. Is this not a FAIR PROPOSAL? LOL! You white Christians have destroyed the Native Americans and it is only fair and right that YOU be destroyed by other communities.
Islam will grow despite of strong opposition to Muslims in the west. Islam is not any new religion, Islam means to submit your will to one and true Lord, who is the Lord of the Thrones. Ah yes, it would be nice if they could make the final step and join the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at. For some, who want to continue to be active in politics, they may feel that our Jama’at is ‘limiting’. Mr. Arold Van Doorn for instance – who also converted to Islam in the Netherlands and who also was a far right politician – is active with his new political party among Muslims in The Netherlands. Mr. Van Doorn does have sympathies for our Jama’at. He met our beloved Khalifa (may Allah strengthen his hand) and he attended the last UK Jalsa. In any case, we should invite this new Muslim to our Jalsas also!

Somi: why always assume the worst case? The far-right politicians of Switzerland and The Netherlands, who have converted to Islam, are noble persons and none of them joined the extremists. If you look at it carefully those who joined ISIS were usually petty criminals and alcoholics, who wanted to join a criminal gang like Isis and not a ‘normal’ Muslim Community. So, yes, we would be even more happy if they had joined the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, but still we are happy for the step that they have taken. Congratulations!
According to my observation there are many sects of Islam. Only 3 sects of Islam who promotes peace, love, respect other beliefs namely: Progressive Muslim, Ahmadiyyah and Sufi. ( if I make mistake, correct me)
Others want to create the Islamic state or syariah state.
