Kosovo Serb leader Oliver Ivanovic, who was standing trial over the killings of ethnic Albanians during the 1998-99 war, was shot dead Tuesday in what Serbia called an act of terrorism.
The European Union and United States called on both sides to remain calm and for Kosovo authorities to bring the killers to justice without delay. They also urged authorities in Kosovo, a former Serbian province that won independence a decade ago, and Serbia to recommit to working for a normalization of relations.
Ivanovic was considered a moderate, among mainly ultranationalist Kosovo Serb politicians, who maintained relations with NATO and EU officials even after Serbia lost the control of its former province following NATO’s 1999 bombing to stop a deadly Serb crackdown against ethnic Albanian separatists.

I have lived and worked in Kosovo for more than 3 years (1999 – 2002). I have also visited this ‘divided city’ (both sides). My view is that there should be a referendum in the Serbian part of North Kosovo. Let them decide whether they want to join Serbia or not. I understand there are some villages in Serbia with Albanian inhabitants. Same thing goes for them. And then honor their choices. No need to keep someone against their wishes.
