Bern meeting: ICRC head hopes for consensus, resettlement agreement at migration conference

The head of the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is hoping that an upcoming international conference on migration being held in the Swiss capital will yield political consensus over aspects of the Mediterranean refugee situation. He supports a Swiss proposal to directly resettle some refugees from Libya.

Peter Maurer told the SonntagsBlick newspaper that he finds it a shame that the world’s interior ministers are “still mostly focused on controlling migration” instead of on improving the humanitarian situation in countries like Libya, where many migrants gather in dangerous circumstances before attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

“We are especially interested in speaking directly with the interior ministers, also with those from Africa,” Maurer said in anticipation of the Mediterranean migration conference set to take place in Bern tomorrow. “They are the ones who can take concrete steps to improve the situation in their own countries.”

But Maurer also managed expectations for the gathering, where he said, “we must remain realistic”.

“It’s important now to aim for consensus,” he said. “The African leaders will only be able to implement a common strategy in a second step.”

He also admitted that simply pushing the problem entirely onto the shoulders of African governments is a “legitimate concern” that “must be avoided”.

In order to ensure Europe does its part, he supports initiatives like the one proposed last week by Swiss Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga to directly resettle certain refugees to Switzerland via special flights.

“Even if resettlement programmes can’t solve every problem, they can still help to ease the migration pressures in northern Africa,” Maurer said.

  1. Ah! This problem is so huge and to try and solve it it needs to be looked at comprehensively. Each country and location is different. For instance the million refugees who walked to Germany: They are let’s say actually the lower middle class of the source countries. The higher ones got bank accounts and visas. The lower ones did not even manage to get out of their own country. In Bangladesh with the Rohyingyas it is different again. Everyone was made to go. Therefore each group needs a different approach. A lot needs to be done to address the reasons of fleeing, be it civil war, ethnic cleansing or simply economic reasons.

  2. Why do people like to live in Christian countries? Because:
    1. Most Christian follow Gods laws; love your enemy if they are hungry give them breads and if they are thirthy give watter for drink. Love foreigner as you love your self”
    2. Most Christian are generous provide job and house etc.

As we see, most immigrant Muslim want to create their own system; Syariah state, syariah Bank, syariah dressing, syariah school, syariah Malls, Syariah hospital, Syariah Hotel, Halal food, Halal restaurant, etc etc

Their main goal to eliminate non Islam employee, and boycott non Islamic product. Extremist Muslim very hate, and hostility toward Christian, they do not know how to thank and aporeciate it.

Thousand extremist muslim immigrant who join ISIS. And some they attack innocent people in Paris, London, Germany. USA.

We very understand that Europe countries are relactant to host Muslim refugee, because they create a big problem.
Except if Muslim refugee promise: DO NOT promote Syarih law as long as you live in Christian countries.

As good Muslim immigrant have to obey the law of the land.
    All love❤️

    • Most Muslims in Europe and Americas do NOT push for Shariah to be imposed there. It is a miniscule minority who talks like that. The vast majority like to practice ‘separation of religion and state’. Yes, that is why they went there. Why Somi, as a supposed (pork eating) Muslim is pushing the Islamophobic line so much? Why not look and and stress all the positive images of Muslim Migrants? There are plenty of them! (Just look at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the West, but not only them…)

      • Yes, Ahmadiyyah is my fovorite sect of Islam, ahmadiyyah promote a peaceful Islam. But I still urge Ahmadiyyah to reform ancient Islsmic law completely, not just the system of government such as: democratic seculare.

  3. @ Raffiq-
I think the right strategy is we have to clean our home from bad Muslim, extremist Muslim. Do not let other people( non Muslim) to clean our home.
Extremist Muslim, even few people, but can create a huge problem to us ( all Muslim). They destroy the peaceful image of Islam.
We have to stand up to fight Extremist ideology. That what I am doing now.
Let us clean our home from extremist ideology, if we want to create a peaceful Islam again.
    ❤️

    • That is what the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at – and all its followers – keep trying on a daily basis.
