An exhibition aimed at overturning stereotypical assumptions about Muslim women was held last week.

The event on International Women’s Day was an attempt to move on from the outdated portrayals that are bestowed upon women, said Samina Siddiqi of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association.

She said: “On this day, we wanted to highlight the role of Muslim women in Islam.

“We wanted to show that our women have a voice and have been active across the world as well.

“We celebrated three women in particular; Khadijah, the Prophet’s first and the first women of Islam.

“Aisha, the wife of Prophet Muhammad, who after his death received visitors on religious matters.

“Finally, we also celebrated the Virgin Mary, who holds a very special position in Islam.

“In the Quran, she is one of eight people who have a chapter named after them.”
