Astronomers have spotted some ancient stars, known as RR Lyrae. They are at least 10 billion years old and were found hiding at the centre of the Milky Way.
Although these stars are bright, they are hard to spot because they are hidden behind dense clouds of galactic dust and gas.
Now that we know these ancient stars are out there in the centre of the galaxy, it tells us that the nucleus of our galaxy is a similar age.
The new research will appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
