How to Tackle Current Wave of Terrorism?

By Zubair K Khan
In last few weeks, while analysing reactions of the inhabitants of various European cities, the public unease was never far from the surface. Callers to various electronic and print media houses said they were apprehensive of visiting popular festivals, shopping centres and malls . A shaken teacher who knew one of the attackers in France told media”I never thought for a day in my life that a young person would commit a terrorist act here in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray.” In Ansbach, a town in Bavaria, stunned locals the scene of the suicide bombing at a caffe where abandoned drinks and playing cards bore silent witness to the moment of terror the night before. Before these horrific events, there was Munich tragedy and a knife wielding teenager on a German train. And before that, much deadlier attacks in Nice and Brussels.
From the beginning of current year one can see accelerating pattern of terror attacks in Europe and beyond. In addition to Europe affected areas include Turkey to Bangladesh, USA to Indonesia. According to the group IntelCenter, which tracks acts of terrorism, there has been a significant attack directed or inspired by ISIS every 84 hours since June 8 in cities out side the war zones of Iraq, Syria and Libya.  Almost more than half of committed attacks have been in cities and places traditionally not under threat. Merely big number of these attacks has suddenly sparked public unease in Europe and eroded faith in governments to tackle the threat of terrorism. The trust of people also diminishing  in justice system, accused of leaving too many dangerous people at large. Despite twice trying to go to Syria, Adel K, one of the 19-year-old attackers who killed the priest in France, was released from custody and allowed out of his home for four hours a day. Despite repeated efforts to deport him, the Ansbach attacker Daleel.  M. was still in Germany.
These repeated attacks now have also prompted fundamental social questions. Respect for openness, liberal democracy and due process are being eaten away by a toxic mixture of extremism and psychosis. These attacks, and the expectation of more, have fed not only the mood of growing anxiety. They have become part of a combustible political debate. One Media reporter witnessed this in its rawest form at the site of the Munich killings. A young relative of one of the Turkish victims called out “Allahu Akhbar” in prayer, which was met by a torrent of abuse from some right-wingers present, provoking the Turks to yell “Your sisters will be next.” Police moved in swiftly to keep the two groups apart. In a poll after the attack in Nice, more than two-thirds of the French people questioned said they did not trust the government to combat terrorism effectively, a sharp increase over the previous year.
Too much terror attacks in Northern Europe has also translated into growing hostility toward migration. But German Chancellor Merkel has again insisted that “we can manage” the influx and integrate refugees into German society. A year ago her decision not to send would-be migrants back to their first point of entry into Europe led tens of thousands, from Syria, Iraq and elsewhere, to head for Germany. The slogan “Refugees Welcome” was on banners at city halls and football matches across Germany. It was a remarkable display of generosity toward those fleeing violence and persecution. But the welcome has worn thin. Merkel is now on defence wicket. She along with French President François Hollande, must face the voters next year if she wants another term. Some within her own coalition now cry “We told you so”  among them Bavarian Premier Seehofer.
Now the million dollar question is, how much Europe is prepared to compromise its way of life, the freedoms and rights taken for granted for generations, to do battle with random terrorism? How many public places become fortresses? How many events are canceled if adequate security cannot be guaranteed? How much must be spent on the militarisation of policing? And how many powers of arrest and detention should a government possess without reference to the courts? Or as suggested by some quarters, deportation of all Muslims to their lands of origin.  It’s a problem for everyone living in Europe.  The Muslim community, The Jewish community, The Gay community, The Hindu community, The Sikh community and rather from all walks of life. Every one is different because of religion and culture but at the same time are all the same human beings. Live and let others to live according to their religion and cultural values. Zero tolerance for any one causing terror or any other havoc basing on religious and cultural issues. If all can ensure this golden principle this part of globe can again become a life paradise.

  1. Peace be on all.
The answer to above question in broad terms can be best found in the Friday sermon of July 29, 2016 by Ahmadiyya Muslim Hazrat Khalifatul Messiah V (may Allah be his Helper). He analysed the attitudes of Muslim governments and clergies, the oppression on people of countries. Role of anti-Islam forces and inability of Muslim leaders to realize the trap.

God and Holy Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) had foretold about the solution of problems which we see now a days as terrorism.

The solution is to learn true Islam and practice it as its true form is taught by by the Imam of this age, i.e. The Promised Messiah – The Mahdi (on whom be peace).

The importance of prayer plays great role in establishing peace.
Ahmadis are asked by Hazrat Khailfatul Messiah (a.t.) to conevy the world what real Islam is and also say prayers from Holy Quran. He specifically mentioned four prayers; three for Holy Quran and one from Hazrat Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) which was taught to him by God as Ilqa (spiritual instillation) :

ربنا اتنا فى الدنيا حسنة و فى الاخرة حسنة و قنا عذاب النار

“…….‘Our Lord, grant us good in this world as well as good in the world to come, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.’ ” — From [2:202]

ربنا اغفرلنا ذنوبنا و اسرافنا فى امرنا و ثبت اقدامنا وانصرنا على القوم الكفرين

[3:148] “…… ‘Our Lord, forgive us our errors and our excesses in our conduct, and make firm our steps and help us against the disbelieving people.’”

رب انى لما انزلت الى من خير فقير

[28:25] “…..‘My Lord, I am in need of whatever good Thou mayest send down to me.’”

رب كل شئ خادمك رب فاحفظنى وانصرنى وارحمنى

“O my Lord! every thing is under Your control, O my Lord! so Protect me and Help me and have Mercy on me.”

Defeat terrorism by establishing and spreading the peaceful and beautiful teaching of Islam.
