Resort to referenda

Source. Dawn

The cleavages between the young and elders, between the rich and poor and between regions came to the fore. There were bitter regrets the next day as consciousness of the consequences seeped in. Scotland is another story. Moral: never hold a referendum on an emotionally charged issue at a time when the people are not quite ready for it. Political commentator Anabel Loyd’s remarks reflect what many others felt: “We are far more deeply divided at the end of this campaign than ever before…. We elect our representatives to represent us and our interests … We should need no louder voice than that and now that it has been given to us we have used it to destroy our country….”Ironically, in 2014, English politicians warned the Scots that if they voted in the referendum to leave the UK, they would have to leave the EU also. Now it is the UK which has decided to leave the EU by 52 per cent to 48pc while Scotland voted to remain by 62pc to 38pc. This was a decisive vote. The UK’s was not. It was too narrow a majority for so momentous a decision.

  1. In addition to incorrect timings, wrong method and emotions following reality also paved the way to the shocking result of this referendum. Administering European Union affairs by current European Commission created those very jealousies which member states wanted to avoid at its formation. It did not realise that national loyalties in Europe have rooted so deeply in the history and thinking that you simply cannot sever the ties of their national growth from their roots and plant them elsewhere as garden with new roots to it. This new identification with Europe is a very serious problem, more so for the British because they have a very glorious past of independence, of diplomacy more any other people in the world. Politically conscious people of the world know that and would agree to this claim that the British political awareness and diplomacy is rooted deeply in the history of colorisation and no other nation shares it equally with them. So how can it accept a EU confined identity.
