Istanbul (AFP) – Engaged couples should refrain from flirting, holding hands and “other behaviours that are not endorsed by Islam,” Turkey’s religious affairs agency declared Monday.
Answering the question “is it appropriate for those who are engaged to be married to be able to see each other?”, the agency, known as Diyanet, set out where the limits lay for those who plan to tie the knot in overwhelmingly Muslim Turkey.
“There is no harm in engaged couples meeting to get to know each other, as long as they follow the rules of privacy,” it said in a statement on its website.
“But engaged couples need to refrain from flirting, living together, staying together tete-a-tete in a way that could give rise to gossip, holding hands and other behaviours that are not endorsed by Islam,” it added.
While many Turks embrace European lifestyles in Istanbul, the Aegean coast and Ankara, traditional Islamic values and religious conservatism hold sway in much of the country.
In many areas, sex before marriage is not only a taboo but simply out of the question.
Turkey’s religious affairs agency Diyanet was established in 1924 to oversee religion in the modern secular Turkish Republic following the abolition of the Islamic Caliphate in the wake of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
One of its duties enshrined in the constitution is to enlighten the public about religious values.
It frequently issues directives on advice about moral behaviour. But in the officially secular state these have no legal weight.
Critics complain that Turkey has seen a creeping Islamisation under the Islamic-rooted rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, formerly prime minister, that has undermined the secular principles of the modern state set up by its founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Extremist Muslim Scholars often use the name of Islam to justify his “Fatwa” and mislead Muslim who does not the true Islamic laws.
Most Muslim scholars are guided by the book of Hadith,(not Al Quran), or the ancient Islamic law, or ancient Arab tradition who live in desert.
The ancient Islamic laws and the ancient Arab tradition such as following are not applicable anymore;
1. Women have to wear Hijab, Burqa, Veil.
2. They advocate not to eat meat that slaughtered by non Islam.
3. They advocate eat “Halal food”
4. They advocate Bank Islam.They forbid non Muslim Bank.
5. They advocate Islamic State, Syariah States.
6. They reject the system Secular_democracy.
7. They forbid marry with non Muslim.
8. They forbid non Muslim to to be employee in Bank Islam, Airline etc
9. They forbid non Muslim to join army, Police, and to hold a important position in Government.
10. They advocate to execute the sentence of flogging, beheading, cut off hand at front public square.
11. They advocate separation between women and men in public place.
12. They advocate a woman forbid to shack hand with a man
13. They reject equality between man and woman, woman will receive inheritance 1/2 of man.
14. They forbid women to sing a song at TV and public place.
15. They advocate man to have a beard.
16. etc
So Turkey under Erdogan has been trying to bring Muslim in Turkey back to era the stone age where women are treated as second class. In other word, Erdogan want to establish Syariah law, and reject the system secular-democratic. Erdogan want to change the Turkey’s constitution step by step.
I strongly believe that Allah will curse Turkey, because Erdogan will discriminate the religious minority,and other groups.
