Ahmadiyya Muslim youth took special interest in church’s history, architecture and religious norms. They asked questions from church leaders about Christian beliefs and various visible Church symbols and pictures.
On Saturday, October 11, 2014, more than 80 congregants from St Mark’s Uniting Church of Mornington, Mornington Church of Christ, and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Victoria from ‘Bait-ul-Salam’ (House of Peace) mosque, Langwarrin gathered at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Mornington to demonstrate harmony, respect and tolerance.
Imam Janud of Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Victoria and Father Philip Newman, OAM, Locum Vicar, St Peter’s and St Martin’s Anglican Parish, Mornington organized the event to promote peace, harmony, understanding and mutual cooperation. Both leaders shed light on how Islam and Christianity promote peace and tolerance in the society before they jointly cut the cake that carried the Ahmadiyya motto of ‘Love for All, Hatred for None’.
The spiritually charged atmosphere brought smiles and heart-warming gestures from both ends and Ahmadiyya members shared stories and enjoyed the generous hospitality of the various Church members. Ahmadiyya Muslim members were shown different parts of the historic church built in 1861.
In his brief speech Father Philip Newman said, “I’m truly honoured and delighted to host the Ahmadiyya Muslim group to our church and I believe that such visits will break the walls of misconceptions, misunderstandings and fears.” Further, he explained how this visit will help build new relations and will help us learn from one another.
Imam Janud also addressed the audience and said, “We are passing through some troubled times, where faith is either completely neglected or being misinterpreted for political gains; so the way forward for all faiths is to come forward and unite on one platform and that is serving humanity”. He explained, how the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community preaches and practices the fundamental principle: that before discharging the rights of God, we must discharge the rights of fellow human beings.
